Epidemiological Description of Cystic Ovarian Disease in Argentine Dairy Herds: Risk Factors and Effects on the Reproductive Performance of Lactating Cows

Abstract: To describe the epidemiology of cystic ovarian disease (COD), to find possible risk factors associated with the incidence of cysts and to analyse the impact of COD on the reproductive performance of dairy cows, databases from 22 dairy herds from the main dairy region in Argentina were retrospectively evaluated throughout a 3-year period (2009-2011). A total of 248 COD cases over 9156 parturitions were recorded, resulting in a cumulative incidence rate of 2.7%. Cystic ovarian disease incidence density was lower… Show more

“…COD is the most frequently occurring ovarian disorder associated with impaired ovulation and incidence ranges from 1 to 30% depending on herd and breed conditions (Peter, 2004;Silvia et al, 2005;Vanholder et al, 2006;Rizzo et al, 2011;Cattaneo et al, 2014). The pathogenesis and mechanisms of cyst formation are not fully understood, but it is accepted that the main component of the aetiopathogenesis of COD is altered function of the hypothalamicepituitaryeovarian axis (Silvia et al, 2002).…”

“…Ovarian cysts are one of the most important causes of infertility in dairy cows and are associated with considerable economic loss through their high incidence, increase in days to first service, and increase in days open [ 3 , 4 ]. The incidence of ovarian cysts in dairy cows ranges from 2.7% to 15.1% [ 5 - 8 ]. The exact cause of ovarian cysts is not presently known, but it appears that disruption of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis, by endogenous and/or exogenous factors, causes cyst formation [ 1 , 9 ].…”

“…In the present study, the incidence of ovarian cysts in the herd was determined to be 13.6%, and thus, was found similar to the findings of the other researchers. Several factors affect the incidence of ovarian cysts, including environmental factors, season, herd management, and the age, milk yield, body condition score and uterine diseases of the animal [11,42]. It was reported previously, incidence of luteal cysts ranges between 15.4% and 39.85% as well as it is between 60.1% and 84.6% in follicular cysts [19,26].…”
