Contexto e Objetivo: O desfiguramento facial revela-se um problema quando afeta a criança/adolescente e respetivos familiares. No entanto, apesar de o principal objetivo dos enfermeiros se focar qualidade dos cuidados de saúde, a maioria dos profissionais de saúde carece de competências no cuidado de crianças/jovens com desfiguramento facial. Desconhecidos estudos em Portugal, desenvolveu-se uma análise da literatura com o objetivo de apresentar resultados de investigação e contribuir com reflexões sobre a realização de futuros estudos da contribuição do enfermeiro perante o desfiguramento facial em crianças/jovens. Métodos: Com recurso à plataforma MeSH, validaram-se os descritores: Desfiguramento Facial; Enfermeiros; Emoções, Criança/adolescente e Pediatria; tendo-se procedido à realização de uma pesquisa individual nas bases de dados: CINAHL®; Medline; Nursing & Allied Health Collection; Cochrane Plus Collection; Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews e MedicLatina, através dos operadores booleanos AND e NOT. Resultados: Num total de 92 publicações, considerando-se 22 duplicadas e 66 publicações não cumpriam os critérios de inclusão, considerando-se somente quatro publicações elegíveis. Discussão e Conclusões: As lesões na cabeça são consideradas as principais causas de mortalidade (trauma) e a Fissura do Lábio Palatino é o desfiguramento congénito mais comum. Contudo ambas afetam a qualidade de vida e a identidade da criança/jovem comprometendo o desenvolvimento biopsicossocial. Os enfermeiros, considerados como profissionais de primeira linha, deverão estar capacitados para aconselhar, apoiar, informar e colaborar com a equipa multidisciplinar, capacitando os pais de estratégias que permitam o acesso ao apoio emocional perante o desfiguramento facial e promovendo uma imagem corporal positiva como componente crítica do cuidar.

Background: There are limited studies available that examine the epidemiology of children and adolescents admitted with orthopaedic injuries in developing countries. Several unique factors in South Africa, such as a large socioeconomic divide and a public health sector with limited resources, are suggested to influence injury patterns and fracture management. The data emanating from this study may play a role in identifying potential preventative measures. The aims of the study were to determine the age, sex, duration of admission, aetiology and management regimen of paediatric and adolescent patients admitted with fractures in a South African provincial hospital. Patients and methods: We did a cross-sectional review of medical records for the period 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2017 at a South African provincial hospital. Convenience sampling was done, and demographic and clinical data was collected from patient records. All patients younger than 18 years at the time of injury who were admitted with fractures of the limbs, pelvis or spine were included. Patients with incomplete clinical records were excluded. Results: A total of 731 patients were admitted during this period. After excluding patients with incomplete records, 526 (72%) were included in the study. From these records we found a higher percentage of males admitted (73%) and the average age was 7.72 years. The average duration of admission was 8.59 days. A fall on ground level was the most common mechanism of injury (70.0%), followed by pedestrian vehicle accidents (12.2%). The most frequently fractured regions were the forearm (36.4%), humerus (26.5%) and femur (18.9%). Multiple fractures were sustained by 2.4% and additional non-skeletal injuries were sustained by 2.9%. There was one fatality: a patient who presented with gunshot trauma. Conclusion: Despite fall-related injuries being the most common cause for admission, pedestrian vehicle accident prevention can have the greatest effect on admissions. They require significantly longer hospitalisation and present more frequently with additional injuries. By implementing safety strategies and improving road infrastructure, we can theoretically decrease the number of serious paediatric admissions.

Childhood injuries are unfortunately common. Analysis procedures may assist professionals who work with children with developing preventive measures for protecting children’s wellness. This study explores the causes of pediatric injuries presenting to an emergency department in Taiwan. This nationwide, population-based study was conducted using data from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan (NHIRD). Patients aged <18 years were identified from approximately one million individuals listed in the NHIRD. We followed up with these patients for nine years and analyzed the causes of injuries requiring presentation to an emergency department. Variables of interest were age, sex, injury mechanisms, and temporal trends. A total of 274,028 children were identified in our study. Between 2001 and 2009, the leading causes of pediatric injuries treated in emergency departments were motor vehicle injuries, falls, and homicide. The overall incidence of injuries declined over the course of the study because of reductions in motor vehicle accidents and falls. The incidence of homicide increased during the study period, particularly between 2007 and 2009. A moderately inverse correlation between homicide rate and economic growth was observed (correlation coefficient: −0.613, p = 0.041). There was a general decline in pediatric injuries between 2001 and 2009. Public policy changes, including motorcycle helmet laws and increases in alcohol taxes, may have contributed to this decline. Unfortunately, the incidence of homicide increased over the course of the study. Ongoing financial crises may have contributed to this increase. Multidisciplinary efforts are required to reduce homicide and reinforce the importance of measures that protect children against violence.
