Epidemiología de la varicela en España en los períodos pre y post vacunación

Abstract: Chickenpox has been decreasing during 2005-2007 in Spain. The impact of vaccination is difficult to asses, because of a peak registered in 2004 but also because the lack of vaccination coverage information for this period and the case-data information is available only for the last year.

“…In 2005, the vaccine was marketed and parents started to give it to their children, so it is difficult to establish accurate vaccine coverage rates in our records. 3 Based on our data, the greater percentage of hospitalizations per number of cases (1%) was recorded in 2005, which was also the year when the greatest hospitalization expenses were incurred. This is suggestive of a greater virulence.…”

“…Once hospitalizations for this cause in the Aragón community are analyzed, 3 it is observed that more than half of cases occurred in children younger than 5 years old; therefore, it is expected that health expenses will decrease following the first years of the immunization campaign as long as coverage is high.…”
