Epidemic investigations within an arm’s reach – role of google maps during an epidemic outbreak

Abstract: Epidemics such as novel Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) can be contained and the rate of infection reduced by public health measures such as epidemiologic inquiries and social distancing. Epidemiologic inquiry requires resources and time which may not be available or reduced when the outbreak is excessive. We evaluated the use of Google Maps Timeline (GMTL) for creating spatial epidemiologic timelines. The study compares locations, routes, and means of transport between GMTL and user recall for 17 suitable users w… Show more

“…Telemedicine encompasses both synchronous (audio and video) and asynchronous (e-consults, patient portal messages, through chatbots (virtual agents), and wearable devices). Telemedicine overcome physical barriers to provide patients and physician access to convenient healthcare while conserving personal protective equipment during pandemic [23,26]. Findings from this study suggest that the current COVID-19 pandemic has stimulated regulators and payers to encourage integration of telemedicine during the health crises.…”

“…Os resultados foram encontrados por diversas simulac ¸ões feitas ao longo do tempo. [Sonkin et al 2020] exploraram técnicas de GIS para implementac ¸ão de rastreio de contatos de COVID-19 em Israel utilizando dados do Google Maps Timeline (GMTL). No intuito de demonstrar a acurácia do GMTL, foi comparado com métodos de autorecordac ¸ão.…”

“…The method helps to break the virus transmission chain. In case of COVID-19, researchers are applying different types of technology for contact tracing such as geological location [18], Bluetooth [19], google maps [20]. Generally, all of these contact tracing strategies are found effective when a COVID-19 patient's testing result become positive; therefore, these methods may not be efficacious without an enormous amount of testing facility.…”
