They formed in response to a complex array of geologic controls, notably the genesis of the sedimentary rocks that host most commercial energy resources. It is this genetic relationship between economic resources and environment that forms the basis for this book. Our grouping of petroleum, coal, uranium, and ground water may appear to be incongruous or artificial. But our basic premise is that these ostensibly disparate resources share common genetic attributes and that the sedimentological principles governing their natural distributions and influencing their recovery are fundamentally similar. Our combined careers have focused on these four resources, and our experiences in projects worldwide reveal that certain recurring geologic factors are important in controlling the distribution of commercial accumulations and subsurface fluid flow. These critical factors include the shape and stability of the receiving basin, the major depositional elements and their internal detail, and the modifications during burial that are brought about in these sediments by pressure, circulating fluids, heating, and chemical reaction.Since the first edition of this book in 1983, there has been a quantum leap in the volume of literature devoted to genetic stratigraphy and refinement of sedimentological principles and a commensurate increase in the application of these concepts to resource exploration and development. Two wholly new chapters, 11 and 16, have been added to accommodate these advances, two chapters (7 and 8) have been completely rewritten, and Chapters 3, 6, 9, 10, and 13 have been substantially revised.We review the spectrum of terrigenous (land-derived or siliciclastic as opposed to in-place or biochemical) clastic depositional systems and their component genetic facies, with emphasis on subsurface as well as field recognition. A multi-proxy study of deeper-water carbonates (Upper Jurassic, southern Germany): combining sedimentology, chemostratigraphy and palynofacies Abstract Deeper shelf carbonates are often composed of relatively monotonous successions with few diagnostic sedimentological characteristics. The Upper Jurassic of southern Germany provides a classical example for deeper ramp carbonate environments, dominated by limestone/marl sequences including conspicuous sponge/microbial bioherms. Sedimentological analysis was integrated with stable isotope (O, C) and palynofacies analysis in an attempt to reconstruct the dominant depositional controls (sea level, climate, nutrients) as well as to delineate genetic sequences and their stacking patterns. Small-scale (3-10 m thick), medium-scale (5-25 m thick) and large-scale (45-60 m thick) sequences could be recognised, which all share similar patterns and trends. Oxygen isotopes from bulk rock carbonate samples were interpreted as records of temperature trends which were related to climatically induced sea level fluctuations. A positive oxygen isotope trend (i.e., cooling and associated relative sea-level fall) in combination with increasing absolute palynoclast abundances (increasing proximality) are inferred to mark regressive hemi-sequences. Negative trends in oxygen isotopes (i.e., warming and associated relative sea-level rise) and a decrease in absolute palynoclast abundances (increasing distality) are interpreted to indicate transgressive hemi-sequences. Cyclic sedimentation in the Southern Alpine Rhaetic: the importance of climate and eustasy in controlling platform‐basin interactions

Uppermost Triassic (Rhaetic) facies, as developed in the Southern Alpine region of Northern Italy, were deposited in a rapidly subsiding, fault‐dissected trough (the Lombardy Basin) bounded by carbonate platforms. The main part of the Rhaetic succession consists of 10‐m‐scale asymmetric cycles, each divided into three parts: a lower shale portion; a central rhythmic portion consisting of repeated marl‐limestone couplets, the limestone parts of which thicken upward; and an upper, wholly carbonate unit. A study of the diagenetic history of the series demonstrates that both the major asymmetric cyclicity and the limestone‐marl couplets of the central rhythmic member (together constituting a ‘compound’ cyclic form) are fundamentally depositional in nature. It is suggested that this compound cyclicity resulted from the superposition of a low‐frequency (approximately 100 000‐year periodicity) asymmetric carbonate mud signal with a higher‐frequency terrigenous mud signal. Field, petrographic, and geochemical investigations suggest that the basinal carbonate is predominantly allochthonous in origin, having been derived as relatively pure aragonitic mud from adjacent carbonate platforms. It is postulated that the asymmetric carbonate signal was linked to the ecological effects of eustatic fluctuation on platform carbonate systems. Repeated subaerial exposure of subtidal muds in shallow areas indicates that such sea‐level variations occurred. A model is presented in which the basinward export of carbonate was negligible in the deepening phase, increased to a maximum during shallowing and was finally halted by the emergence of large platform flats. In contrast, the higher frequency terrigenous mud signal of the basin is thought to have been climatically modulated; fluctuations of a shorter period than those predicted by the Milankovitch theory affected hinterland precipitation and runoff. Particularly rapid subsidence and high depositional rates may have allowed the preservation of this signal.
