Epicardial, pericardial and total cardiac fat and cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetic patients with elevated urinary albumin excretion rate

Abstract: Background We evaluated the association of cardiac adipose tissue including epicardial adipose tissue and pericardial adipose tissue with incident cardiovascular disease and mortality, coronary artery calcium, carotid intima media thickness and inflammatory markers. Design A prospective study of 200 patients with type 2 diabetes and elevated urinary albumin excretion rate (UAER). Methods Cardiac adipose tissue was measured from baseline echocardiography. The composite endpoint comprised incident cardiovascular… Show more

“…According to the results, higher than normal levels of CAT are correlated with greater risk of mortality and cardiovascular incident. In addition, CAT is linked to inflammation, as it is positively associated with IL-8 (43).…”

“…It has been reported that cardiac fat accumulation contributes to the high mortality following myocardial infarction in subjects with T2D 16 . However, despite an increasing body of evidence showing an association between elevated myocardial TG content and cardiac dysfunction in humans 17 , it remains largely unclear whether and how alterations in myocardial TG synthesis and hydrolysis affect heart function.…”

“…In addition, diabetes enhances the production of proinflammatory cytokines in epicardial adipocytes, which may adversely affect the adjoining myocardium, and potentially, other organs. Accordingly, in type 2 diabetes, epicardial adipose tissue mass presages the occurrence of major cardiovascular events and the progressive decline in glomerular filtration rate …”
