Epicardial Fat Thickness Is Independently Associated with Psoriasis

Abstract: Background: Several studies have showed an association between psoriasis and cardiovascular (CV) diseases and metabolic syndrome (MS). Assessment of CV risk in patients with psoriasis has become an important issue. Epicardial fat thickness (EFT) is an emerging cardiometabolic risk factor and has been shown to be related to atherosclerosis. EFT has not been studied in the context of psoriasis. Objective: To compare the EFT in psoriasis patients with that in control subjects. Methods: 31 patients with psoriasis … Show more

“…Recently, it has been showed an increased EAT thickness measured by transthoracic echocardiography and MDCT in psoriasis patients and, in one study, that EAT closely correlated with CIMT in psoriasis patients . However, in addition to smaller study groups (31–60 patients), there was no measurement of AVF, to elucidate its relation with abdominal adipose tissue in psoriasis patients.…”

“…We have read the article ‘Epicardial Fat Thickness Is Independently Associated with Psoriasis' written by Akyildiz et al with a great interest [1]. The authors aimed to compare the epicardial fat thickness (EFT) in psoriasis patients with that in control subjects.…”

“…Epicardial adipose tissue functions as a paracrine organ by releasing bioactive adipocytokines into the adjacent interstitium of the myocardium and coronary arteries, and may represent cardiovascular risk . Recent studies have shown significantly higher EAT volume in psoriatic patients compared with control subjects, and EAT was independently associated with the presence of CAC . There is a correlation between EAT and BMI or metabolic syndrome, but Japanese psoriatic patients comprise only 0.34% of the population, with metabolic syndrome and obesity generally much less prevalent than Caucasians .…”
