EPAC-lung: European pooled analysis of the prognostic value of circulating tumour cells in small cell lung cancer

Abstract: Background: Circulating tumour cell (CTC) number is an independent prognostic factor in patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) but there is no consensus on the CTC threshold for prognostic significance. We undertook a pooled analysis of individual patient data to clinically validate CTC enumeration and threshold for prognostication. Methods: Four European cancer centres, experienced in CellSearch CTC enumeration for SCLC provided pseudo anonymised data for patients who had undergone pre-treatment CTC count.… Show more

“…Recently, a similar study conducted by Foy et al showed that higher pretreatment CTC counts are a negative independent prognostic factor in SCLC when considered as a continuous variable or dichotomised counts of ≥15 or ≥50. 36 Nevertheless, this study only included studies from four European cancer centers and they only investigated the relationship between pretreatment CTCs level and patients’ clinical outcomes. Therefore, we conducted the current meta-analysis to comprehensively investigate the prognostic significance of CTCs in SCLC and provide evidence support to clinical practice.…”

“…First, high level of CTCs at baseline is a negative prognostic factor for PFS and OS, as confirmed by a meta-analysis of Zhang and collegues ( 62 ). Secondly, a clear cut-off has not been identified ( 99 ).…”

“…Выявление ЦОК не считается оптимальным методом для ранней детекции новообразований, хотя можно заметить, что некоторые разновидности неоплазм отличаются повышенной склонностью диссеминировать ЦОК (например, рак молочной железы, мелкоклеточный рак легкого и т.д.) [115]. Но анализ ЦОК может эффективно дополнять иные разновидности ЖБ [116].…”
