“…These patients developed visceral disease resulting in their death. Review of histologic findings revealed eosinophilic granuloma; however, the disease in these patients exhibited a definitely more aggressive course [178]. Two other patients died of pneumonia, one as a complication of a cauda equina injury from a lesion involving the fifth lumbar vertebra [ 1501 and the other as a complication of increased intracranial pressure, with a lesion noted in the left temporal bone [93].…”

“…In eosinophilic granuloma, lesion margins are irregular and endosteal erosion occurs (e.g. Lichtenstein & Jaffe ; Platt & Eisenberg ; Sbarbaro & Francis ; McCullough ). In renal osteodystrophy, rates of resorption and bone remodelling are increased, resulting in increased overall cortical porosity (e.g.…”

“…As the true nature, etiology, and pathogenesis of histiocytosis X have not been elucidated, variable treatment mo-daLties have been proposed (Sedano et al 1969, Soskolne et al, 1977, Lin et al 1979, Patrikiou et al 1984, Zuendel et al, 1984, Excellent response has been reported in 28 cases of eosinophilic granuioma of bone approached by a variety of treatment modalities, including surgery and radiation (McGavran & Spady I960). Zuendel et al (1984) reported that bony lesions of histiocytosis X were sensitive to various treatments and that conservative, individually planned therapy was most appropriate, Sbarbaro & Francis (1961) as well as Patrikiou et al (1984) stated that curettage should be the preferred treatment for a solitary lesion of eosinophilic granuloma and that radiotherapy or chemotherapy should be reserved for surgically inaccessible regions, while Ochsner (1966) noted a favorable response after radiotherapy. In general, surgical curettage is recommended for the treatment of jaw lesions while radiotherapy and chemotherapy should be reserved for lesions which are either too numerous or inaccessible to surgery (Johnson & Mohnac 1967.…”
