The extensive use of chemical compounds in agriculture has been related to the occupational exposure of farmers, in addition to environmental degradation and contamination. Such factors can potentiate the imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant compounds, thus allowing the excessive production of reactive oxygen species, which can damage biomolecules and lead to various diseases, including Alzheimer's and cancer. To correlate the toxic effects with exposure to pesticides, oxidative stress biomarkers have become a viable alternative, as they are more stable, specific, and sensitive molecules, with greater measurement capacity, being able to express normal and pathological biological processes or pharmacological responses to therapeutic interventions. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the application of the use of oxidative stress biomarkers in the study of exposure to pesticides. After reviewing the literature in online databases (PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Google Scholar), it was possible to conclude that different parameters have been used as fundamental tools during all stages of risk assessment after exposure to pesticides.

Glyphosate’s primary metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) is the most detected pollutant in surface waters. Recent studies have raised concerns regarding its toxicity, yet the involved underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. A disruption of the gut microbiome, which plays a crucial role in host health, could be the mediator of most adverse effects. We investigated the impact of AMPA exposure on the gut microbiome of spined toad tadpoles (Bufo spinosus). We hypothesized that AMPA could alter the gut microbiota composition and that these effects could depend on the microbiota source. We exposed tadpoles to minute concentrations of AMPA and analyzed their faecal microbiota using 16S rRNA gene sequencing as a proxy of the gut microbiota. AMPA exposure decreased the gut bacterial biomass and affected bacterial community composition of tadpole’s faeces. Furthermore, we observed interactions between AMPA exposure and maternal body condition on the Bacteroidota and Actinobacteriota phyla abundances. This suggests a maternal effect on early-life microbial colonizers that could influence the response of the gut microbiome to AMPA. These findings highlight the importance of considering the gut microbiome when studying the effects of environmental contaminants. Further research is needed to elucidate the long-term implications of this microbiome alteration for amphibian health.

This study aims to assess the acute toxicity of commercial-grade Cypermethrin (10% EC) and evaluate the hematological and behavioral alterations in a freshwater fish Channa punctatus upon short-term exposure to Cypermethrin. A four-day static acute toxicity test was performed to estimate the median lethal concentration (LC50) value of Cypermethrin. During the acute toxicity test, the behavior of the control and cypermethrin exposed fish was critically observed and recorded. After completing the acute toxicity test, the hematological effects of Cypermethrin in C. punctatus were evaluated using two sublethal dosages (0.08 mg/L and 0.12 mg/L). Results of the study revealed that this pesticide induced significant mortality in C. punctatus with a 96-h L50 value of 0.263 mg/L. Cypermethrin exposed fish showed hyperactivity, irritability, erratic swimming, frequent surface visit, etc. Exposure to sublethal concentrations of Cypermethrin for a short period resulted in a significant decline (P<0.05) in total erythrocytes count (TEC), packed cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration as compared to control groups. In contrast, pesticide-exposed groups had a significant increase (P<0.05) in mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and total leucocyte count (TLC). It is apparent from the results of the study that this commercial formulation is toxic to the studied fish. This study also revealed hematological and behavioral alterations in C. Punctatus which could be used as biomarkers for incipient Cypermethrin intoxication.
