Enzymatic characterization of Nocardia spp. and related bacteria by API ZYM profile

Abstract: Characterization of 62 isolates belonging to the genus Nocardia and related bacteria was obtained by using the API ZYM system. The difference in enzymatic profile should allow a relatively efficient, low-cost means to identify aerobic actinomycetes of clinical significance.

“…In 1990, Boiron and Provost further evaluated the API ZYM system for the detection of constitutive enzymes on chromogenic substrates with 62 isolates belonging to the genus Nocardia and related bacteria (65). Results from this study were consistent with those of Kilian's study (288), except for the reactions with N. brasiliensis.…”

“…Then, approximately 5 mL of distilled water was distributed into each cupule of the honeycombed wells of the tray. After two drops of the suspension were dispensed into each cupule (65 µL), the strips were incubated for 4 h at 37 o C. The API ZYM test was conducted twice in order to ensure reproducibility of the results (Boiron and Provost, 1990).…”
