Environmentally-safe bimetallic Ag@Co magnetic nanocomposites with antimicrobial activity

Abstract: In this communication we describe the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of the bactericide activity of a superparamagnetic bimetallic Ag/Co polymeric nanocomposite material for the treatment of bacteria contaminated aqueous solutions.

“…Furthermore, TEM images of the cross-sectioned nanomaterials for protocol C is illustrated in Figure 2a. As it is observed, the NPs on the polymer show a size of 15 -20 nm as it was also shown at [83]. Crystalline structure of Fe3O4-NPs was confirmed by electron diffraction pattern as shown in Figure 2b.…”

“…Pre-treatment of the C100 was carried out by following the procedure already described [83,84]. First, the raw material was treated with 1.0 M NaCl for 2 h and washed with deionized water (3 times) so as to convert all the functional groups into Na + form.…”

“…Depending on the chemical nature of these MNPs, the produced PMNCs have different applications: bactericide assays, complex water treatment, heterogeneous catalysis and electrocatalysis [5,12,33,[48][49][50][51]. In despite of the in situ formation of the MNPs on the polymeric support, its initial ion exchange properties are not significantly changed, which represents and advantage of IMS.…”

“…From this viewpoint, they can be considered as a "nano analogous" of fibrous carboxylic ion exchange materials such as, for example FIBAN K-4. [31,32] The surface of these materials can be easily modified with MNPs as it has been shown in our recent publications [33,34].…”
