Environmentally Friendly Dispersants for HP/HT Aqueous Drilling Fluids Containing Mn3O4, Contaminated With Cement, Rock Salt, and Clay

Abstract: Dispersants are widely used in drilling fluids to prevent solids flocculation and to control the rheological properties of the fluids. There is high demand for effective, thermally stable and environmentally friendly dispersants for HPHT drilling fluids. This work was undertaken to investigate the use of environmentally friendly dispersants in HPHT aqueous drilling fluids containing manganese tetroxide (Mn3O4) as the weighting agent. The dispersants were chosen because they are non-toxic to aquatic organisms a… Show more

“…A lignite based additive was used as a supplementary fluid loss additive. In this fluid a newly developed HPHT acrylic based dispersant was used and was very effective in controlling the rheology (Kar Y et al 2011). Also fine & medium CaCO 3 were used as bridging agents.…”

“…To avoid agglomeration of Mn 3 O 4 particles at high temperatures, Mu et al (2006) suggested synthesizing Mn 3 O 4 particles using H 2 O 2 as an oxidant and starch as a capping agent. Moreover, dispersant packages were developed for water-based (Kar et al 2011) and oil-based ) drilling fluids weighted with Mn 3 O 4 (Al .…”

“…Filtrate loss reducer is the core additive of drilling fluid, which can reduce the amount of drilling fluid filtrate loss penetration into the formation interior to ensure safe oilfield production. In recent years, fumaric acid and maleic acid were used by many researchers to synthesize drilling fluid additives [ 22 , 23 , 24 ]. If FAS can be used as raw material to synthesize filtrate loss reducer for oil well drilling fluid, it will be a method to realize the high-value utilization of FAS.…”
