Over the last decades, the combined effects of global climate changes and severe land use modifications have been exacerbating river hydrological alterations and habitat fragmentation in many Mediterranean rivers. This trend is predicted to intensify, with expected significant impacts on taxonomic and functional diversity of benthic communities in the next future. The present research aims at investigating the long-term combined effects of flow intermittency, climate and land use changes on benthic diatom communities, by analysing data collected over 11 years in Mediterranean streams of the NW-Italy. We demonstrated that the ongoing global changes and local environmental pressures determined a significant decline in diatom species diversity at both local and regional scales. More in detail, flow intermittency affected both diatom diversity and life history traits, with communities of intermittent reaches taxonomically and functionally different and less heterogeneous than assemblages characterizing perennial ones. Communities inhabiting intermittent sections showed high percentages of small, mainly stalked and pioneer taxa belonging to the low profile guild, highlighting the strong environmental pressure exerted by the hydrological alterations. Conversely taxa colonizing permanent reaches were bigger, belonging to the high profile guild and able to produce colonies, denoting environmental stability. The results we obtained could be ascribed to the long-term effects of drying in Mediterranean streams and, as first in the literature, we highlight that diatoms are able to provide long-terms responses to environmental changes caused by water stress, when hydrological disturbance is persistent.

La comunidad fitoperifítica es un componente clave para la estructura y el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas lóticos. Dada la importancia de esta biota en los ambientes dulceacuícolas, se diseñó el presente estudio orientado a identificar cómo responde la comunidad fitoperifítica a variaciones temporales tales como el régimen pluviométrico y los cambios espaciales (por ejemplo, la disponibilidad de hábitat y sustratos en el río Alvarado y algunos tributarios). En cada punto demuestreo se realizaron raspados de la superficie de los sustratos en inmersión de fácil remoción (roca y tronco). En cuanto a la densidad fitoperifítica no se observaron diferencias significativas a nivel espacial, temporal y de sustratos. Con relación a la diversidad de Shannon se encontraron diferencias significativas a nivel temporal. Según el análisis EMNM y el análisis de similitud, la composición de la estructura de la comunidad varió a nivel espacial (R: 0,2059, p: 0,002) y temporal (R: 0,1529, p: 0,002). Las variables fisicoquímicas DBO5, sólidos totales, coliformes totales, fósforos y alcalinidad influyeron de manera significativa en la distribución de los taxones. Los resultados de esta investigación permitieron identificar que, en las estaciones evaluadas, la estructura de la comunidad varía a nivel espacial y temporal debido, principalmente, a factores ambientales que influyen en el proceso de colonización y sucesión.

In order to explore the characteristics of the periphytic algae community structure and its relationship with environmental factors in the Taiyuan region of the Fenhe River, a total of six sampling sites were investigated in July and December 2021. The effects of water quality status and environmental factors at each sampling point on the community structure of epiphytes were detected. The results showed that a total of 7 phyla and 54 genera of periphytic algae were identified in the Taiyuan region of the Fenhe River, and the species composition was mainly Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta, and Chlorophyta. According to the analysis results of the biodiversity index, the water body of the Taiyuan region of the Fenhe River is in a state of moderate pollution. The correlation analysis between the epiphytic algae and environmental factors showed that the cell density of algae was significantly correlated with dissolved oxygen (DO), phosphate (PO3− 4-P), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus (TP), and transparency (SD) in the wet season. The algal cell density in the dry season was significantly correlated with water temperature (WT), TP, PO3− 4-P, and COD. According to the redundancy analysis, the community distribution of the epiphytic algae in the Taiyuan region of the Fenhe River was closely related to physical and chemical factors such as COD, nitrate nitrogen (NO− 3-N), WT, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (TN), and TP, and COD is the main environmental factor driving the change in the community distribution of the periphytic algae in the wet season. TN is the main control factor driving the change in the biological community distribution of periphytic algae in the dry season.
