Environmental Safety Analysis of Red Mud-Based Cemented Backfill on Groundwater

Abstract: As one of the main industrial solid wastes, there are a large number of free alkaloids, chemically bound alkaloids, fluoride, and heavy metal ions in Bayer process red mud (BRM), which are difficult to remove and easily pollute groundwater as a result of open storage. In order to realize the large-scale industrial application of BRM as a backfilling aggregate for underground mining and simultaneously avoid polluting groundwater, the material characteristics of BRM were analyzed through physical, mechanical, an… Show more

“…For example, Zhang et al [33] proposed that safety should be considered in mining production, and numerical modeling methods such as Flac 3D should be used for practical engineering and mining method optimization; again, for example, Zhang et al [34] proposed that environmental concerns be incorporated into the evaluation and consideration of practical mining production and backfill processes, as China has introduced the concept of green mining since 2015.…”

“…As raw material prices and the national attention to environmental protection are rising, cement as mine backfill is the most commonly used gelling material, as its prices stay high for a long time and there is still a larger rise space: some remote mining areas of bulk cement to ore prices have risen to RMB 500/t, therefore, development of a new mine backfill gelled material to replace cement has become a new research hotspot. A lot of research and application practice show that water quenching slag of smelter, fly ash of thermal power plant, yellow phosphorus slag of phosphorous chemical industry, red mud of sintering process and other materials are good cement substitutes [36,37].…”
