Environmental Monitoring Aware Routing in Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are designed for many monitoring and surveillance tasks. A typical scenario category is the use of WSNs for disaster detection in environmental scenarios. In disasters such as forest fires, volcano outbreaks or flood disasters, the monitored events have the potential to destroy the sensor devices themselves. This has implications for the network lifetime, performance and robustness. While a fairly large body of work addressing routing in WSNs exists, little attention has been pa… Show more

“…This means there are less successful transmissions in the OLSR scenario. Similar observations were made for AODV (see [14]). The reason for these problems even in the case of a static network is that neither AODV nor OLSR use context values such as the RSSI values.…”

“…Another good example of cooperative technique directly associated with SEE is proposed by Wenning et al [29] with the environmental monitoring aware (EMA) protocol which takes into account the realistic fact that a deployment of a WSN in extreme conditions such as forest fire scenarios which can destroy the sensors devices in any moment due to the fire. This fact has direct implications for the network lifetime, performance and robustness.…”

“…A lot of research on context-awareness has focused on two main fields: routing and applications. Environmental Monitoring Aware Routing [10] propose a multiplicative combination of environmental conditions and other context criteria for routing, which can be useful in disaster scenarios such as forest fires. In [11] [12], contextaware models based on programmable rules are mentioned to target the smart monitoring in logistics systems.…”
