Sedimen sungai telah dipelajari secara intensif dalam studi magnetik lingkungan karena sungai merupakan sumber kehidupan bagi hewan dan tumbuhan yang hidup di dalamnya maupun bagi manusia. Magnetik lingkungan merupakan ilmu yang relatif baru dan menjadi cara alternatif dalam mengkaji lingkungan. Oleh karena itu, dilakukan studi tentang pengukuran suseptibilitas magnetik bergantung frekuensi pada sedimen Sungai Tallo di Kota Makassar. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode suseptibilitas magnetik menggunakan alat Bartington Susceptibility Meter MS2B. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa suseptibilitas magnetik pada frekuensi rendah dan tinggi terdapat perbedaan yang tidak signifikan yang berarti sampel sedimen hampir tidak memiliki bulir mineral superparamagnetik. Sampel dominan mengandung butiran non-SP dengan diameter sama atau lebih besar dari 0,03 µm. Korelasi antara suseptibilitas magnetik bergantung frekuensi dan suseptibilitas magnetik pada frekuensi rendah memiliki korelasi positif yang kuat. Peningkatan χLF menyebabkan χFD juga meningkat. Sampel sedimen mengandung butir multi domain (MD) dan superparamagnetik-simple single domain (SP-SSD). Kelimpahan mineral magnetik dipengaruhi oleh adanya aktivitas antropogenik di sekitar sungai.

In rock magnetism, Vibrating-Sample Magnetometer (VSM) data displays magnetic moment in specific magnetic field applied in descending and ascending magnitude, which results in a pattern called hysteresis loop. This loop characterizes different magnetic materials depending on its shape. In recent years, the usage of computer software to analyze hysteresis loop has become necessary due to its precision. Easily executable, intuitive, and user-friendly open-source programs for analyzing VSM data are still not widely available despite their necessary utilization. HYSGUITS was designed with this issue in mind to further improve the development of tools in this field. HYSGUITS is a Graphic User Interface (GUI) to analyze the hysteresis loop of VSM data. MATLAB is a suitable base for producing this GUI compared to other programming language due to its sophisticated features and clean data visualization. This software is able to visualize hysteresis loop in different ways, mainly through the difference of ascending with descending magnetization value and its 1st derivative. The GUI displays the graph as an interactive plot window which provides detailed observation on each data points, supported by features such as interpolation and smoothing. This article introduces of the functionalities of HYSGUITS and demonstrates its utilization with example use case.

Landasan Ulin is a center for vegetable production, and it has an important role in producing vegetables for the city of Banjarbaru. Agricultural soil in this study was assessed for heavy metal contamination using the geoaccumulation index (I geo ), contamination factor (C f i ), the degree of contamination (C d ), the degree of modified contamination (mC d ), and the Pollution Load Index (PLI) as well as magnetic susceptibility. Samples were collected from topsoil and analyzed using magnetic susceptibility and Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The average concentration of heavy metals in the sampling area A is Fe>Zn>Mn>Cu>Hg, and the area B is Fe>Mn>Zn>Cu>Hg. Magnetic susceptibility values in area A is higher than in area B and the value of magnetic susceptibility can be used as a proxy for monitoring heavy metal concentrations, especially Zn in this area. Zn and Cu exceeded the threshold set by the Indonesian Standards Institute. Igeo results show that the research area is moderately contaminated with Cu, Zn, and Hg. According to C f i , the soil was classified as low contaminated with Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, and Hg, as well as Cd and mCd. The PLI results show that in both area, drastic corrective action is not required.
