The continuous monitoring of the relationship between land surface temperature (LST) and land cover change is imperative for an inquiry into the potential impact of LST on human well-being, including urban outdoor thermal comfort in Lagos State, Nigeria. Using Landsat imagery, this study assessed land cover and LST changes from 1984 to 2019. Land cover was extracted, LST was determined from Landsat imageries and the land cover changes were linked to LST using the contribution index (CI). Afterwards, the universal thermal climate index (UTCI) was calculated to determine the heat stress levels. Findings confirm the presence of urban sprawl and new growth areas in previously rural Local Government Areas (LGAs) eastward, northward and westward of Lagos metropolis and in regions which lie on the fringe of the state's border with Ogun State. Also, a very strong link between high LST intensities and increasing concentration of urban areas in rapidly growing LGAs has been observed. This link further confirms the increased warming of the state, with an increase in mean LST of 2.16°C during 1984–2019. The UTCI which was used to gauge the influence of LST on outdoor thermal comfort ranged from moderate to strong heat stress levels. This study helps to strengthen the case for definite policies and actions which should be aimed at achieving moderate urban development through increased urban tree canopy/green infrastructure provision and carbon sequestration activities in urban design/landscape design, in Lagos State.

The main objective of this paper is to inspects the causal relationship between urbanization, industrialization and CO2 emissions in Nigeria using the technique of Modified Toda and Yamamoto causality for the period spanning 1982 -2018. The long run causality result indicates that there is bidirectional causality running from economic growth to CO2 emissions and from industrialization to economic growth. This suggests that higher economic growth is linked with CO2 emissions and the growth of industries is related with higher economic growth. Again, unidirectional causality also exists running from urbanization to economic growth, urbanization to CO2 emissions, urbanization to industrialization. Based on these findings, it is therefore recommended that Nigerian government should strategies comprehensive environmental policy in the coming years that would make the environmental rules and regulations more severe to dodge any inconveniences that is associated with urbanization and industrialization in the near future for the purpose of maintaining the quality of the environment. Contribution/ Originality:This study contributes to the existing literature via a novel attempt in providing a quantitative analysis of the causal relationship between urbanization, industrialization and CO2 emissions in the case of Nigeria using Modified T-Y causality procedure.

The impacts of crude oil price and urbanization on environmental pollution in Nigeria for the time frame of 1981 to 2016 is the main objective of this paper and the objective was achieved through the application of Augmented Dickey Fuller and Kwiatkowski Philip Schmidt Shin unit root tests together with Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model in the process of achieving stationarity and cointegration among the variables. The results obtained showed from ADF indicate that foreign direct investment and urbanization were stationary at level while environmental pollution and crude oil price at first difference. But KPSS result revealed that all the variables with the exception of urbanization were stationary at level and the bound test result revealed that all the variables are cointegrated. The long-run and the short-run findings indicate that foreign direct investment and crude oil price have significant negative sign with environmental pollution for the periods under study and this shows that these variables are helps in ensuring clean environment and maintain the quality of the environment. But urbanization results from the long-run and the short-run models shows that it has significant positive sign with environmental pollution and this signifies that urbanization is among the drivers of environmental pollution in the country. We recommend that for the country to maintain good environmental quality the country must limit the process of urbanization to best level in order to reduce the associated environmental impacts and to maintain balance were the quality of the environment is not harm by the increasing urbanization. Contribution/ Originality: This study contributes to the existing literatures by providing evidence that rise in crude oil price helps in reducing the level of environmental pollution and urbanization is accountable for the increase in the level of environmental pollution in Nigeria.
