Environmental hazard of Novoyavorivsk municipal landfill

Abstract: Novoyavorivsk is located near large sulfur deposits in a transborder with Poland. The existing sanitation system in Novoyavorivsk is imperfect. Municipal wastes are stored in cloughs, ravines, river valleys. This causes an environmental hazard, as polluted wastewater is discharged to the water bodies. The aim of the work is environmental hazard assessment of Novoyavorivsk landfill. The tasks of the research are as follows: determination of chlorides and sulfates content in the landfill edaphotopes; measurement… Show more

“…Contamination of soils and natural landscapes by various wastes, including waste heaps and sludge accumulators (Malovanyy et al, 2020a), landfills (Popovych et al, 2018), and wastewater from municipal and industrial wastewater treatment (Malovanyy et al, 2016), creates significant environmental problems, thereby violating the environmental security in the country, guaranteed by the national and international legislation (Brauweiler et al, 2017). These problems include the contamination of agricultural land with unused plants and nutrients of mineral fertilizers.…”

“…One of the most dangerous effects arising from the landfills operation is the burning of household waste. In addition to the burning of garbage with different morphological composition, the vegetation appeared during the natural overgrowth (vegetative reclamation), is exposed to high temperature (Popovych et al, 2018). Under the influence of direct fire most plants in landfills are killed.…”

“…In particular, the research by Vodyanitskii (2016) stresses the fact that municipal solid waste landfill is one of the largest sources of environmental pollution, where leachate percolates through soil, reaches surface and ground waters. Increased radiation background is observed at the landfills (Tulaydan et al, 2017;Popovych et al, 2018;Malovanyy et al, 2018). The work of Fytanidis, Voudrias (2014) is dedicated to the modeling of unsaturated polyphase airflows and liquid phases and biochemical processes of aerobic biodegradation of organic fraction of municipal solid waste, taking into account their temporal and spatial evolution.…”
