Environmental factors between normal and superagers in an Argentine cohort

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Normal aging usually brings age-related cognitive decline. However, there is a group of aged individuals who have exceptional memory performance: the superagers. Objective: Our aim was to identify the environmental factors that could influence exceptional memory performance in a cohort of Argentine individuals. Methods: Forty healthy volunteers >80 years of age were classified into two groups, superagers (SA, n=20) and normal agers (NA, n=20), according to the Northwestern SuperAging Program cri… Show more

“…Population aging is accelerating globally ( Khan, 2019 ). Associated with the aging is the risk of neurocognitive decline ( Calandri et al, 2020 ) affecting independent living ( Harada et al, 2013 ) and causing significant burdens on caregivers and society. Among the aging populations, declines in processing speed, working memory ( Grady, 2012 ), and sustained attention ( Fortenbaugh et al, 2015 ) are the most noteworthy.…”

“…Recent research indicates that social network size and diversity do not play a key role in the preservation of cognitive abilities in very old age (Calandri et al, 2020). At the same time, SuperAgers were found to have more positive relations with others when compared to cognitively normal older adults (Cook Maher et al, 2017).…”

“…Argentine study did not find differences between SuperAgers and subjects with normal aging concerning environmental factors, including years of schooling. 8 Although education is often associated with cognitive reserve and brain maintenance, participants with high cognitive performance from previous studies were highly educated, even in the few investigations from LMIC.…”
