Environmental control in the assembly of metallomacrocycles and one-dimensional polymers with 4,2′:6′:4′′-terpyridine linkers and zinc(ii) nodes

Abstract: One-dimensional polymers and discrete [4 + 4] and [6 + 6] metallocycles assemble in reactions of 4′-aryl-substituted 4,2′:6′:4′′-terpyridines with ZnX2 in the presence of potential arene guest molecules.

“…[21] In contrast, crystal growth under analogous conditions led, in our hands, to the discrete metallomacrocylic coordination compound [{ZnI2 (2) In an earlier investigation of molecular and polymer assemblies involving 4'-(2',3',4',5',6'-pentafluorobiphenyl-4-yl)-4,2':6',4''-terpyridine and zinc(II) halides, we observed competitive formation of a 1D-coordiantion polymer and a metallosquare in the same crystallization tube. [33] However, in the current investigation, powder diffraction data are consistent with [{ZnI2 (2) [34] recode TUNKEU [21] , poor agreement). This result once again underlines the non-predictability of assembly processes.…”

“…Adjacent chains are related to each other by inversion ( Figure 12 b). Each embrasure in the crenelation can be likened to three sides of a metallocycle and it is significant that the assembly of [Zn( 23 )Cl 2 ] n polymer chains competes with the formation of the metallosquare [Zn( 23 )Cl 2 ] 4 [ 52 ]. In Figure 11 b, we described the V-shaped 4,2′:6′,4″-tpy as a moderately rigid building block.…”

“…Although the studies based on the ligand properties of the 4,2 0 :6 0 ,4 00 -terpyridines, especially those which are 4 0 -substituted, have grown significantly due to their use as building blocks in coordination chemistry (Housecroft, 2014), the reports have been restricted mainly to coordination polymers (Housecroft, 2014) and molecular metallo-macrocycles (Yoshida et al, 2007;Constable, Housecroft, Prescimone et al, 2014;Constable, Housecroft, Vujovic & Zampese, 2014a). Within the set of known 4,2 0 :6 0 ,4 00 -terpyridines functionalized in the 4 0 -position, the 4-pyridyl substituted 4 0 -(4-pyridyl)-4,2 0 :6 0 ,4 00 -terpyridine (ptp) has proven to be the most versatile.…”
