EnviroMic: Towards Cooperative Storage and Retrieval in Audio Sensor Networks

Abstract: This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of EnviroMic, a novel distributed acoustic monitoring, storage, and trace retrieval system. Audio represents one of the least exploited modalities in sensor networks to date. The relatively high frequency and large size of audio traces motivate distributed algorithms for coordinating recording tasks, reducing redundancy of data stored by nearby sensors, filtering out silence, and balancing storage utilization in the network. Applications of acousti… Show more

“…In the past decade, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been deployed in wide range of applications such as habitat monitoring [1], environment monitoring [2,3], and surveillance systems [4]. Many of these applications need to gather a large amount of data and transmit it to the sink where it can be analyzed.…”

“…Many modern enterprise applications [10], [11], [12], scientific collaborations across wide-area networks [13], [14], and large-scale distributed sensor systems [15], [16] are placing growing demands on distributed streaming systems to provide capabilities beyond basic data transport such as wide-area data storage [17] and continuous and opportunistic processing [12]. An increasing number of streaming applications are applying "in-network" and "in-flight" data manipulation to data streaming systems designed for enterprise systems [18], financial management [19], scientific computing [20], [13], [21], and situation monitoring applications [20], [22], [23].…”

“…Today, visual (Cyclops [15], CMUcam [2]) and audio (EnviroMic [13]) sensors enable the sensing of high bandwidth, rich data; providing much more information than simple scalar measurements of temperature, humidity, etc [10]. This rich data can supplement the simple measurements with more complete context information.…”
