Abstract. Distributed systems are becoming more complex in terms of both the level of heterogeneity encountered coupled with a high level of dynamism of such systems. Taken together, this makes it very difficult to achieve the crucial property of interoperability that is enabling two arbitrary systems to work together relying only on their declared service specification. This chapter examines this issue of interoperability in considerable detail, looking initially at the problem space, and in particular the key barriers to interoperability, and then moving on to the solution space, focusing on research in the middleware and semantic interoperability communities. We argue that existing approaches are simply unable to meet the demands of the complex distributed systems of today and that the lack of integration between the work on middleware and semantic interoperability is a clear impediment to progress in this area. We outline a roadmap towards meeting the challenges of interoperability including the need for integration across these two communities, resulting in middleware solutions that are intrinsically based on semantic meaning. We also advocate a dynamic approach to interoperability based on the concept of emergent middleware.

Abstract:Implementing domain specific Information Extraction (IE) technologies to retrieve structured information from unstructured data is a challenging and complex task. It requires both: IE expertise and domain knowledge, provided by a domain expert who is aware of, e.g., the text corpus specifics and entities of interest. While the IE expert role is addressed by several approaches, less has been done in enabling domain experts in the process of IE development. Our approach targets this issue. We provide a base platform for collaboration of experts' through IE modeling languages. We provide each of the experts with an IE language that is adapted to their respective expertise. IE experts leverage a fine grained view and domain experts can use a coarse grain view on IE plan. We use Model Driven Architecture concept to enable transition among the languages and a model of algebraic IE framework. To prove applicability of our approach we realized AdaptIE and demonstrate it in a real world scenario for the SAP Community Network.

Abstract. In this paper we tackle some of the most pressing obstacles of the emerging Linked Data Web, namely the quality, timeliness and coherence as well as direct end user benefits. We present an approach for complementing the Linked Data Web with a social dimension by extending the well-known Pingback mechanism, which is a technological cornerstone of the blogosphere, towards a Semantic Pingback. It is based on the advertising of an RPC service for propagating typed RDF links between Data Web resources. Semantic Pingback is downwards compatible with conventional Pingback implementations, thus allowing to connect and interlink resources on the Social Web with resources on the Data Web. We demonstrate its usefulness by showcasing use cases of the Semantic Pingback implementations in the semantic wiki OntoWiki and the Linked Data interface for database-backed Web applications Triplify.
