Enterocolitis Caused by Ehrlichia sp. in the Horse (Potomac Horse Fever)

Abstract: Abstract. Potomac horse fever was reproduced in 15 ponies by transfusion of whole blood originally from two natural cases and subsequently from ponies infected by the transfusions. Incubation periods vaned from 9 to 15 days. Affected ponies developed varying degrees of fever, diarrhea, anorexia, depression, and leukopenia.Eleven affected ponies were killed, three died in the acute phase of the disease, and one did not show clinical signs. The most consistent post-mortem findings were fluid contents in the cecu… Show more

“…Although the clinical signs of CDAD infection can be characteristic, they are not specific. Therefore, there are no clinical features that specifically distinguish infections by C. difficile from infections by other agents of intestinal disease such as C. perfringens, Salmonella sp or Neorickettsia risticii (equine ehrlichial colitis) (Cordes et al, 1986;Diab et al, 2012, in press;Weese et al, 2006).…”

No entanto, na porção final do duodeno, no jejuno e íleo foram observadas lesões granulomatosas na lâmina própria relacionadas com invaginação das vilosidades intestinais, com presença de calcificação e numerosas colônias bacterianas.…”

“…Titres peak within a week or less, and will then plateau or drop slightly (50). In horses necropsied in the acute stages of the disease, gross pathological lesions may be absent, but are most consistently present in the caecum and large colon, and to a lesser extent in the small intestine and the glandular and pyloric regions of the stomach (58). By electron microscopy, E. risticii have been detected in the cytoplasm of mast cells and macrophages in the colonic lamina propria and submucosa, in the deep glandular epithelial cells of the large colon, and in cultured blood monocytes (56,58 …”
