This study characterises the Naturally Occurring Radionuclides (NORs) content of a suite of secondary raw materials or industrial residues that are normally disposed of in landfills or lagoons but now are increasingly used in green concretes. This includes ashes from a variety of industrial processes and red mud from aluminium production, as well as air pollution control residue and cement kiln dust. The chemical composition of the samples was determined with X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). The Ra-226, Th-232 and K-40 activity concentrations were obtained by gamma spectrometry, and the results were compared with recently published NOR databases. The correlation between the NOR content and the main chemical 2 composition was investigated. The radioactive equilibrium in the U-238 chain was studied based on the determination of progeny isotopes. The most commonly used calculation methods (activity concentration index and radium equivalent concentration) were applied to classify the samples. The radon exhalation rate of the samples was measured, and the radon emanation coefficient was calculated. Significant correlation was found between the NORs and certain chemical components. The massic exhalation demonstrated a broad range, and it was found that the emanation coefficients were significantly lower in the case of the residues generated as a result of high-temperature combustion processes. The results showed that a weak correlation between the Ra-226 concentration and the radon exhalation. This emphasizes that managing the Ra-226 content of recycled material by itself is not sufficient to control the radon exhalation of recycled materials used in building products. The investigated parameters and their correlation behaviour could be used to source apportion materials found during the process of landfill mining and recovery of material for recycling.

ABSTRAKDISTRIBUSI RADIONUKLIDA ALAM PADA SAMPEL TANAH, AIR DAN TANAMAN DI SEKITAR PLTU REMBANG.Telah dilakukan penelitian radioaktivitas pada sampel air, sedimen dan tanaman (daun singkong) di sekitar Pusat Listrik Tenaga Uap (PLTU) Rembang.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui kandungan radionuklida 226Ra, 228Ra, 232Th dan 40K dalam air, tanah dan tanaman yang mencerminkan data lingkungan terkini dalam rangka mendukung program monitoring lingkungan dari pencemaran radioaktivitas di sekitar PLTU Rembang. Pengambilan sampel, preparasi maupun analisis mengacu pada prosedur analisis sampel radioaktivitas lingkungan.Radionuklida alam diukur dengan spektrometri gamma yang dilengkapi detektor HPGe terakreditasi oleh ISO 17025 tahun 2008. Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan radioktivitas dalam air berkisar (0,90-52,0) mBq/L,dalam tanah berkisar (100,06-760,30) Bq/kg sedangkan dalam daun singkong berkisar (24,59 – 60,96) Bq/Kg. Berdasarkan PERKA BAPETEN. No 7 Tahun 2017, nilai batas radioaktivitas di air yang diijinkan berkisar (730 – 1000) mBq/L, sedangkan hasil analisis air yang terdapat disekitar PLTU Rembang masih di bawah nilai batas yang diijinkan oleh BAPETEN.

Coal-fired power plants (CFPP) provide approximately 40% of the world's energy demand. Naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) contained in coal become enriched in coal combustion residues as a result of the elimination of carbon during combustion. The fly ash and bottom ash produced from CFPP may be significant sources of exposure to naturally occurring radionuclides for the population near the combustion plant or ash dumps. Despite this fact, very few studies have actually addressed the relationship of the NORM enrichment factors and the quality of coal used. This paper aims to relate the quality of coal to the enrichment factors for the radionuclides of interest (K 40 , Ra 226 , Th 232 and Po 210) in coal combustion residues from three South African CFPP. The data from other CFPP was also taken into account to establish this correlation. The feedstock coal used in these CFPP is typically low quality, with ash content in the range of 25-45 wt%. The radionuclides investigated were determined by gamma spectrometry with the exception of Po 210 , which was determined by alpha spectrometry. The enrichment factors for the radionuclides of K 40 , Ra 226 , Th 232 and Po 210 in the fly ash and bottom ash (except Po 210) was found to be directly proportional to the quality of coal. That is when the ash percentage increased (coal quality decreased) the enrichment factor decreased. The Po 210 radionuclide in the bottom ash had an enrichment factor less than one.
