Enrichment of Marinobacter sp. and Halophilic Homoacetogens at the Biocathode of Microbial Electrosynthesis System Inoculated With Red Sea Brine Pool

Abstract: Homoacetogens are efficient CO2 fixing bacteria using H2 as electron donor to produce acetate. These organisms can be enriched at the biocathode of microbial electrosynthesis (MES) for electricity-driven CO2 reduction to acetate. Studies exploring homoacetogens in MES are mainly conducted using pure or mix-culture anaerobic inocula from samples with standard environmental conditions. Extreme marine environments host unique microbial communities including homoacetogens that may have unique capabilities due to t… Show more

“…As an extra advantage, higher salt concentration may even induce biofilm formation, as shown for Clostridium ljungdahlii via NaCl addition [47]. Alqahtani and colleagues recently enriched a halophilic homoacetogen culture from a hypersaline deep Red sea brine pool [48]. Their culture was capable of reducing CO 2 to acetate at 3.5% NaCl, though at low current densities.…”

“…Data, Also, Revealed that the salttolerant plants (Sids1) were more by the different amelioration techniques in studied soil under salinity stress conditions. mainly due to avoid Na toxicity of salinity particularly what concerning effects on metabolic processes, as well as ionic imbalance which reflected on water balance causing " physiological drought " Alqahtani, et al, (2019). Differences exist between plant species in their tolerance of salinity can be related to the salt content in the soil and/or water which causes an initial decline in growth (yield), and also to the rate of yield decline that occurs with increasing salinity.…”

“…To obtain operational taxonomic unit (OTU) abundances for further statistical analysis, the bioinformatic processing of the forward and reverse 16S rRNA amplicon reads was conducted following the same procedures reported in a previous study (Alqahtani et al, 2019).…”
