Enlargement of rat submandibular salivary gland induced by single amputation of lower incisor teeth

Abstract

Enlargement of rat submandibular salivary gland indtrced by single amputation of lower incisor teeth, J Oral Pathol 1986: 15: 327-333.Histological. histomctrie and ultrastructural studies of rat subtnandibular salivary glands (SMG) lollowitig single amputation of lower incisor teeth were made. The SMG enlargement oeeurred after the tooth amputation, and its maximal increase of weight was reached 7 days later. The results of histological and histomctric observations showed that the enlargement of SMG was due to both hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the aeinar eells. and hypertrophie acinar cells were ultrastrueturally eharaeterized by well-developed organelles sueh as rough-surfaced endoplasmie reticulum and Golgi apparatus whieh filled the eittire cytoplasm. Hydropically swollen ner've endings with disappearanee of vesicles were frequently found. In later stages, degenerative or neerotic cells were seattered in the aeini. and the size and the struetur'e of the remaining aeinar cells beeame gradually similar to those of non-treated glands. The morphological changes seen in the enlarged SMG induced by single amputation of the lower ineisor teeth in rat were similar in many ways to those of sialadenosis indueed experimentally by aetive sympathomitnetic drugs.

“…Considering that the mechanism of AMPT involves the beta adrenoceptor stimulation 5,26 and that the beta adrenoceptor stimulation induces activation of the adenyl cyclase-cAMP-protein kinase system, how can one explain the reduced activity of the enzyme PFK-1 in sympathectomized glands? A possible explanation is the following: we started AMPT five days after denervation so that the axons were already degenerated.…”

Morphological and functional state of the epithelial cells in submandibular salivary glands after repeated amputations of the incisor teeth in adult rats
