Enhancing the undergraduate industrial engineering curriculum

Abstract: PurposeThis paper aims to present the results of an initial research study conducted to identify the desired professional characteristics of an industrial engineer with an undergraduate degree and the emerging topic areas that should be incorporated into the curriculum to prepare industrial engineering (IE) graduates for the future workforce.Design/methodology/approachA survey was administered to faculty and industry professionals across the USA to describe the desired characteristics and define the important … Show more

“…It should be noted that, by the way the question was asked and the fact that the groups were relatively large, it was enough that only one of the members was less involved so that the score in this question is lower. Our perception is that there was a great involvement of the students in solving the case, which is in line with the precepts of the PBL approach (Sherwood, 2004;Warnock & MohammadiAragh, 2016;Yadav et al, 2010); good teamwork is an important skill desired for a production engineer (Eskandari et al, 2013).…”

“…All these skills are highly prized in a newly graduated engineer (Eskandari et al, 2013;Warnock & Mohammadi-Aragh, 2016). Thus, according to market expectations, PBL is more appropriate and efficient in the training of future engineers than traditional teaching methods (Mills & Treagust, 2003;Warnock & Mohammadi-Aragh, 2016).…”

“…The last decade showed an industrial engineering growth toward nontraditional industries, particularly information technology (IT) and service-related industries that add considering technical, organizational, ethical, social, legal, and economic factors to the project management process [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Moreover, Industrial engineering is known for creating new systems to solve problems related to waste and inefficiency [3].…”
