Real-life applications during the teaching process are a desirable practice in simulation education. However, access to real cases imposes some difficulty in implement such practice, especially when the classes are large. This paper presents a teaching case for a computer simulation course in a production engineering undergraduate program. The motivation for the teaching case was to provide students with a realistic manufacturing case to stimulate the learning of simulation concepts and methods in the context of industrial engineering. The case considers a virtual factory of skateboards, which operations include parts manufacturing, final assembly and storage of raw materials, work-in-process and finished products. Students should model and simulate the factory, under push and pull production strategies, using any simulation software available in the laboratory. The teaching case, applied in the last two years, contributed to motivate and consolidate the students' learning of discrete-event simulation. It proved to be a feasible alternative to the previous practice of letting students freely choose a case for their final project, while keeping the essence of project-based learning approach.

The majority of the approaches to managing project risk follow the logic of process groups. Project Management Institute (PMI) has 29 tools and techniques related to risk management process groups. Consequently, engineering and business schools have been accused of educating managers with sharp analytical skills but little understanding of social problems. The literature suggests that too much attention is focused on learning the techniques and formalities of risk management but not enough on the advanced issues of management. Also, the literature argues that there are two approaches to project management (hard and soft). The hard side only covers part of the managerial aspects which helps to manage foreseeable uncertainties. However, unforeseeable uncertainties need skills that related to soft side approaches such as emotional intelligence, navigating the organization's culture, risk attitude, participative leadership style, and managing the relationship with stakeholders. This study provides an intensive review of the literature to discuss the need for integrating the hard and soft sides of management to achieve an effective risk management process. In addition, it proposes a conceptual framework that provides guidelines to enhance overall risk management efficiency.

ResumenLa investigación tuvo como objetivo identificar la satisfacción de los estudiantes de tres de los cinco programas de licenciatura de la Facultad de Ingeniería Química de la Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (México) en la realización de las prácticas profesionales. El estudio permite también inferir si sus empleadores conocen las competencias de la licenciatura, con lo que se validaría a la práctica profesional como un escenario real de aprendizaje y de experiencia laboral. La investigación consistió en un estudio no experimental de diseño transversal para un grupo de estudiantes en un solo momento temporal en el marco de la asignatura de prácticas profesionales. En los resultados se destaca que la realización de las prácticas profesionales ha mejorado la vinculación entre la universidad y las empresas. Al tener escenarios reales de aprendizaje el 96% de los estudiantes manifestaron que aplicaron los conocimientos adquiridos en el salón de clases, un 84% manifestó haber adquirido nuevos conocimientos de valor curricular para su formación y las actividades que realizaron fueron de provecho para la empresa. Palabras clave: prácticas profesionales; competencias; vinculación; mercado laboral; escenarios reales de aprendizaje Contribution of the Internship in the Professional formation in the Students of Chemical Engineering Faculty at the Autonomous University of Yucatan (México) AbstractThe aim of the research was to identify the satisfaction of students in three of the five undergraduate programs of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering of the Autonomous University of Yucatan (Mexico) in the experience obtained during their professional internships. The study also allows to inferring whether their employers know the competences of the degree, as to validate the internship as a real scenario of learning and acquisition of work experience. The research consisted of a non-experimental study of cross-sectional design for a group of students in a single temporary moment in the internship course. The results highlight that the implementation of internship has improved the university-industry collaboration allowing real learning scenarios. Of all the students involved in the study, 96% stated that they applied the knowledge acquired in the classroom, 84% stated that they had acquired new knowledge of curricular value during training and that the activities performed were of benefit to the company.
