Enhancing the quality of alkyd resins using methyl esters of rubber seed oil

Abstract: Purpose: Alkyd resins constitute a very high proportion of conventional binders used in surface coatings. In order to enhance the quality of these alkyd resins methyl esters of rubber seed oil (MERSO) were used in the preparation of the resins. Methods: MERSO were obtained by in-situ alcoholysis of rubber seed. Alkyd resins having oil lengths of 45, 50 and 55% were prepared with MERSO, phthalic anhydride and glycerol using alcoholysis method. Lead (II) oxide and xylene were used as catalyst and refluxing solve… Show more

“…This implies refining of melon seed oil improves its resistance to water and acid. Similar observation was made during the studies on quality enhancement of alkyd resins using methyl esters of rubber seed oil [10]. Samples PCMESAR 2 and PCMESAR 3 showed almost the same resistance to the different solvent media, except alkali, despite the difference in the oil length.…”

“…[9] also observed the higher saponification values of finished alkyd compared to the corresponding triglyceride oil in the study on production and characterization of castor oil-modified alkyd resins. Similar observation was made by [10] during the study on enhancing the quality of alkyd resins using methyl esters of rubber seed oil.…”

“…Alkyd resin was also defined by [5] as the products of poly-condensation reaction between polybasic acid and polyhydric alcohol modified with fatty acid or drying oil. However, it has been reported by [11], where vegetable oil is partially replaced in alkyd synthesis.…”

“…The industrial finishes include primers and top coatings for refrigerators, furniture and electrical equipment [7]. The enhancing quality effects on the synthesized alkyd resin using methyl esters of rubber seed oil were indicated by the improvement in physico-chemical properties of the finished alkyds [8]. An oil modified alkyd based resin was synthesized using castor oil to have promising physico-chemical properties and high [9].…”
