A high-molecular-weight poly(styrene-co-2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-acrylonitrile) (ABC)-type terpolymer with a high tensile strength (7.36 MPa) was synthesized using free radical polymerization. Sulfobetaine zwitterionic groups, N,N-dimethyl-N-methacryloxyethyl-N-(3-sulfopropyl), were introduced into the ABC terpolymer, and electrospun nanofibers were fabricated for the removal of particulate matter particles in air streams. The nanofibers exhibit a high filtering efficiency (>99.9%) with a low pressure drop (177 Pa) at a constant airflow velocity of 5.3 cm s–1 with a quality factor of 0.025 Pa–1. Almost no effect on the filtering efficiency and pressure drop for nanofiber mats is observed even after treatment with saturated vapors of isopropyl alcohol for 24 h, confirming to ISO 16890. With fiber diameters in the range of 340–600 nm, the particle capture possibility is increased because of the large surface area compared to known electrospun nanofibers. The nanofibers also show an excellent antibacterial activity (99.9%) against the Gram-negative bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 4352) and the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538) because of the presence of the sulfobetaine zwitterionic groups. The antibacterial property of nanofibers is desirable for air filter applications to prevent the spread of infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria.

Nowadays, at production facilities with paint-spraying booths that use paint and varnish materials to cover the surfaces of product, the problem of gas flow contamination with finely dispersed solid particles of dust and rubbish, which negatively affect the quality of products, is increasingly being raised. In order to minimize the content of solid particles in the gas flow, coarse and fine filters are installed in the paint-spraying booths, which prevent dust particles from entering the surface of products. However, the existing purification devices have a number of disadvantages that affect the efficiency of collecting finely dispersed particles from the gas flow with a size of 0.5-5 microns. The authors of article developed a square separator to increase the efficiency of collecting finely dispersed particles from gas flows in the paint-spraying booths. The installation of proposed separation device in the paint-spraying booths affects not only the quality of collecting solid particles, but also increases the service life of fine and coarse filters In the course of numerical studies, the results of impact of structural and technological parameters, namely, the impact of inlet rate and scale of separation device on the efficiency of collecting solid particles from the gas flow, were obtained.

Membrane Biofouling Control by Surface Modification of Quaternary Ammonium Compound Using Atom-Transfer Radical-Polymerization Method with Silica Nanoparticle as Interlayer

A facile approach to fabricate antibiofouling membrane was developed by grafting quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) onto polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane via surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom-transfer radical-polymerization (ARGET ATRP) method. During the modification process, a hydrophilic silica nanoparticle layer was also immobilized onto the membrane surface as an interlayer through silicification reaction for QAC grafting, which imparted the membrane with favorable surface properties (e.g., hydrophilic and negatively charged surface). The QAC-modified membrane (MQ) showed significantly improved hydrophilicity and permeability mainly due to the introduction of silica nanoparticles and exposure of hydrophilic quaternary ammonium groups instead of long alkyl chains. Furthermore, the coverage of QAC onto membrane surface enabled MQ membrane to have clear antibacterial effect, with an inhibition rate ~99.9% of Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive), respectively. According to the batch filtration test, MQ had better antibiofouling performance compared to the control membrane, which was ascribed to enhanced hydrophilicity and antibacterial activity. Furthermore, the MQ membrane also exhibited impressive stability of QAC upon suffering repeated fouling–cleaning tests. The modification protocols provide a new robust way to fabricate high-performance antibiofouling QAC-based membranes for wastewater treatment.
