Enhancing Mood, Cognition, and Quality of Life in Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract: Pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS), representing approximately 5% of all MS cases, affects the central nervous system during its ongoing development. POMS is most commonly diagnosed during adolescence but can occur in younger children as well. For pediatric patients with MS, it is critical to manage the full impact of the disease and monitor for any effects on school and social functioning. Disease management includes not only disease-modifying therapies but also strategies to optimize wellbeing. We rev… Show more

“…In particular, vitamin D integration in MS has been well studied. A vitamin D deficiency is associated with the progression of long-term disability, while the increase in its serum level reduced brain lesions and improved timed tandem walking [ 25 , 26 ], high levels of vitamin D, and a diet low in saturated fat are associated with lower relapse rates in pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis [ 27 ], with a higher physical and mental QOL [ 28 ]. The role of the vitamin B complex in MS is still debated [ 29 ].…”

“…Care models that advocate exercise, nutrition, healthy weight, avoidance of smoking or smoke exposure, and proper sleep have a meaningful contribution to the management of POMS patients. 54 Exercise interventions have the potential to reduce fatigue and depression in youth with POMS. 55…”

“…It is not clear whether the recently reported increased incidence may be real or more likely dependent on better diagnostic methods [ 2 , 153 , 154 , 155 , 156 ]. As outlined before, at any rate, data in POMS remain scarce mainly due to small sample size [ 1 , 157 ]. Despite POMS’s active inflammatory course, with frequent relapses/partial recovery episodes [ 158 , 159 , 160 ], presently available DMT may attain a discrete inflammation control [ 161 , 162 ], with a beneficial reduction of annualized relapse rates which may interfere with age specific cognitive impairment [ 160 ].…”
