Enhancing Adaptive Learning and Assessment in Virtual Learning Environments with Educational Games

Abstract: The rising acceptance of Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) in the e-Learning field poses new challenges such as producing student-centered courses that can be automatically tailored to each student's needs. For this purpose digital games can be used, taking advantage of their flexibility (good video games always try to adapt to different players) and capabilities to stealthily track players' activity, either for producing an accurate user model or enhancing the overall assessment capabilities of the system. … Show more

“…3 papers and 1 Ph.D. thesis are related to adaptive learning gamification: Durieu, Solal and Tercieux [45] discusses a study on perturbed joint and independent fictitious play processes in n-person games and how they relate to the selection of strategies in the long run, Del Blanco et al [41] discussed the integration of digital games in virtual learning environments, using a middleware architecture to integrate video games in VLEs, and Johnson and Zaiane [83] proposes an online Intelligent Tutoring System gamified to teach medical imaging. Ghaban [61] proposes a model of adapting the gamification elements, that can predict the best combination of gamification elements for a learner's personality profile.…”

“…With this increasing rise of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in people's daily lives many educational institutions have started integrating ICTs in their course syllabus. This is illustrated, amongst others by the growing use of different kinds of Learning Management Systems (LMSs) (Del Blanco et al, 2011) providing teachers and learners with new opportunities as well as challenges. Whilst teachers get the opportunity to more easily manage and administer course contents and learning resources, these become much more accessible for students, since they are no longer restricted to factors such as time and place.…”
