Enhancement of processability, surface, and mechanical properties of paper based on rice straw pulp using biopolymers for packaging applications

Abstract: Two biopolymers, chitosan and oxidized starch, were used as wet-end additives to improve the strength properties of the paper because of their biodegradable and non-hazardous qualities. The present study reports the improvement in surface and strength properties of packaging-grade paper made with rice straw pulp using biopolymers, chitosan, oxidized starch, and surface sizing added at the wet end of the paper machine. Use of chitosan at all doses from 0.5 to 10 kg/ton enhanced important surface and strength pr… Show more

“…CH's cationic properties allow for strong interaction with anionic cellulosic fibers, and its interaction with fillers on the surface can enhance the bonding between the filler and cellulosic fibers, ultimately increasing retention. CH application in different processes of paper industry like wet‐end of papermaking, surface sizing, filler modification and paper coating was reported earlier 37,42,51–55 . CH was also found to be effective filler modifier in wet end of papermaking 11,28 .…”

“…Although applications of rice straw cellulose and paper have been reported during recent years [ 15 , 16 ] there are few studies on the antibacterial activity of rice straw paper [ 17 ]. Therefore, we report herein the development of biobased and bioactive material by coating longan peel extract onto rice straw paper.…”
