Enhancement of oil recovery by surfactant-polymer synergy flooding: A review

Abstract: With the depletion of conventional resources, it is necessary to enhance the recovery of remaining oil. The tertiary oil recovery chemical flooding is the most promising for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The use of alkali in chemical flooding produces fouling with the formation, which brings new challenges to chemical flooding EOR. So, alkali-free surfactant-polymer (SP) flooding is used as a new solution for EOR. The polymer makes the displacing fluid have a high viscosity and increases the swept volume. The s… Show more

“…Consequently, chemical flooding as a secondary oil recovery technology has gradually become the primary enhanced oil recovery method and has been applied to old oilfields after water flooding. For instance, polymer flooding technology has been widely utilized in Daqing Oilfield since 1996, resulting in remarkable economic effects and confirming the feasibility of the technique in enhancing oil recovery in reservoirs after water flooding [1][2][3]. However, the oil reservoirs exhibit pronounced heterogeneity in both the horizontal and vertical directions after polymer flooding, leading to a significant challenge in profile control [4,5].…”

“…Surfactants are widely used in the tertiary oil recovery process. Surfactants improve oil recovery by decreasing the interfacial tension (IFT) between the injected water and residual oil and changing the wettability of the formation rock. IFT reduction and wettability alteration are two of the most important mechanisms in improving oil recovery using various injectants. , Surfactant molecules have a polar hydrophilic head and a nonpolar hydrophobic tail, enabling them to form aggregates in the aqueous phase. When being dispersed in water, surfactant molecules form micelles by gathering the tails and contacting the surrounding water using their heads .…”
