Rapid development in the printing and dying industry produces large amounts of wastewater, and its discharge in the environment causes pollution. Keeping in view the carcinogenic and mutagenic properties of various dyes, it is important to treat dyed wastewater. Maple leaf biochars were produced at different pyrolysis temperatures, i.e., 350 °C, 550 °C, and 750 °C, characterized for physicochemical properties and used for the removal of cationic (methylene blue (MB)) and anionic dye (congo red (CR)). Response surface methodology (RSM) using three variables, i.e., pH (4, 7, and 10), pyrolysis temperature (350 °C, 550 °C, and 750 °C), and adsorption temperature (20 °C, 30 °C, and 40 °C), was designed to find the optimum condition for dyes removal. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed an increase in CaCO3 crystallinity and a decrease in MgCO3 crystallinity with the increase of pyrolysis temperature. RSM design results showed that maple biochar showed maximum adsorption capacity for cationic dye at higher pH (9–10) and for anionic dye at pH 4-6, respectively. Under the selected condition of pH 7 and an adsorption temperature of 30 °C, biochar MB550 was able to remove MB and CR by 68% and 74%, respectively, from dye mixtures. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses showed that MB550 was able to remove both dyes simultaneously from the aqueous mixtures.

Alum residuals were collected from a water treatment plant and used for improving the photocatalytic degradation of humic acid (HA) by combinations of zinc oxide (ZnO) and powdered residuals from water purification plant (PRWPP). The influence of operating conditions such as initial humic acid concentration, pH, irradiation time, PRWPP to ZnO ratio, catalyst dose, and light illuminance have been investigated. The optimum PRWPP to ZnO ratio was 10:90. Using the prepared composites instead of bare ZnO raised the HA removal efficiency from 85.5% to 97.8%, and from 38% to 48.1% at catalyst doses of 1.2 g/l and 0.4 g/l, respectively. Moreover, it reduced energy consumption from 210.4 to 166.2 Wh per mg of HA. An artificial neural network model (ANN) was developed to predict the removal efficiency under different operating conditions. The optimum ANN structure yielded a coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.993). Modified Langmuir-Hinshelwood pseudo-first-order model was used for describing the degradation kinetics at different initial concentrations of HA.

In order to extract a highly concentrated dye from textile industry wastewater, an electrocatalytic oxidation method based on Ru/Ir/Ti, RuO2/IrO2/TiO2 electrodes and high‐density graphite was used. Optimization of the oxidation process was controlled by varying such parameters as current density, pH, concentration of supporting electrolyte (NaCl), wastewater treatment time. The maximum dye removal from wastewater is achieved at pH 7.1, current density 70 mA cm−2, NaCl concentration 3 g/L, and treatment time 15 minutes. Among the investigated electrodes, the Ru/Ir/Ti anode and titanium‐based oxides of these metals proved to be the most effective. The percentage of color removal for all anodes increases with increasing current density and duration of solution treatment. For a graphite electrode, at a current density of 70 mA cm−2 and a treatment time of 10 minutes, a maximum dye removal of 90 % is achieved. The percentage of color removal for Ru/Ir/Ti and RuO2/IrO2/TiO2 electrodes is higher than for graphite and amounted to 98 % and 92 %, respectively. The results of the electronic structure of the dye made it possible to shed light on the nature of the electronic spectra and the possible mechanism of the electrocatalytic act. Consideration of the dependence of color removal, COD and TOC on such parameters as current density, water treatment time in the reactor showed that the efficiency of the wastewater treatment process increases in the series: graphite<RuO2/IrO2/TiO2<Ru/Ir/Ti. The role of various factors of RedOx processes that affect the degree of dye degradation, as well as chloride ions on the formation of active particles with high chemical energy at the moment of their formation, is discussed.
