Enhancement of declarative memory associated with emotional content in a Brazilian sample

Abstract: Several studies have documented that emotional arousal may enhance long-term memory. This is an adaptation of a paradigm previously used in North American and European samples in investigations of the influence of emotion on long-term retention. A sample of 46 healthy adults of high and low educational levels watched a slide presentation of stories. “…Emotional memory is, therefore, the one influenced by emotions, motivations and moods. Since information is more easily consolidated when it has an emotional connection to the individual, this interaction can be considered adaptive, for it allows the keeping of information that are relevant to its survival in a more efficient way [12], [13].…”

“…In general, the literature shows that declarative memory for emotional stimuli is better than memory for neutral stimuli in both healthy young adults [4,5,6,7] and healthy older adults [8]. Although older adults generally have poorer memory than young adults, both age groups remember more about emotional information, such that the overall age discrepancy in memory is less pronounced for highly arousing events [9].…”
