Enhanced Protection Security Using the System Integrity Protection Scheme (SIPS)

Abstract: Events such as faults, loss of load or generation may cause unwanted relay operations which initiate cascade tripping leading to system collapse. Security of power system protection is a major concern for utilities. A System Integrated Protection Scheme (SIPS) based approach is proposed for improving security of protection operations. Identification of vulnerable points which may maloperate during a stressed condition and initiation of preventive strategy are proposed in this paper. Synchronized measurements o… Show more

“…In this work, the load shedding strategy based on the UFLS relay is preferred and thereby the priority of the loads is classified as critical loads and non-critical loads. The loads connected at bus 3,4,12,15,18,26, and 28 are ranked as critical loads and the rest of the loads are non-critical loads. The system frequency response identified from phasor measurement units is used for the curtailment of a load.…”

“…Many authors have targeted the issues related to practical power networks such as Iran's power system area, 34 Taiwan power system, 35 Korean electric power system, 72 Hydro-Québec network, 73 Kansai electric power company, 81 Chilean power system 105 and so forth. New England 39 Bus test system is also a preferred choice of many researchers 32,36,37,54,57,[59][60][61][62][63]85 for implementing the SIPS in different scenarios. Apart from these systems, IEEE 14 bus test system, IEEE 68 bus test system and IEEE 145 bus test system are also favored by some researchers to implement the SIPS.…”

“…In recent years, the increasing low-inertia intermittent power generation and the growing frequency of extreme weather events have contributed to multiple notable blackouts around the globe [1]. As these trends are expected to continue into the future and to overlap with the preexisting challenges to secure grid operation such as electricity deregulation, the demand for novel adaptive power system emergency control and protection solutions continues to grow as well.…”

“…Unlike traditional OOS relays, controlled power system separation should coordinate the OOS detection and the subsequent line tripping actions. In the controlled splitting literature [4]- [6], the OOS detection is known as the "when to split" problem, and the splitting cutset selection is known as the "where to split" problem [1], [4]. In most of studies, these problems are considered independently from each other.…”
