Enhanced Nonlinearities in Double-Fishnet Negative-Index Photonic Metamaterials

Abstract: Abstract-We numerically analyze the optical response and nonlinear susceptibilities of fishnet metamaterials with the holes infiltrated by a third-order nonlinear dielectric. Through full-wave simulations and employing a nonlinear parameter retrieval method, we confirm and quantify the enhanced nonlinearities, showing bulk third-order nonlinear susceptibilities that are up to two orders of magnitude larger than the nonlinear dielectric. We also use the retrieved parameters to calculate the material figure of m… Show more

“…Note that the dependence of b C and b L on x 2 and x 3 , although not explicitly shown in (2) and (3), occurs due to the analogous form of (4) and (5). Before proceeding with our design algorithm, it is worth discussing the main assumptions under which the equivalent circuit of [26] has been developed, as they will be proven useful for the development and interpretation of the featured procedure.…”

“…Initially, they have been employed for the realization of low-loss, negative-refractive-index materials in the microwave, near-infrared, and optical region [1][2][3][4][5]. Nonetheless, such structures should not be confused with the traditional frequency selective surfaces (FSSs), exhaustively studied since the 1950's [6,7].…”

“…However, the magnitude of negative refractive index is a little smaller and its bandwidth is also much narrower compared to negative refraction materials based on metallic periodic structures [35][36][37]. According to Eqs.…”
