Enhanced Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Chain-Extended Waterborne Polyurethane Coatings with Cellulose Acetate Butyrate

Abstract: A series of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) dispersions were prepared by chain-extending a prepolymer made of polyester diol, isophorone diisocyanate, and dimethylol propionic acid using cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB). The particle size and viscosity of the WPU dispersion were measured. In addition, we investigated the effects of CAB on the thermal, mechanical, and optical properties of WPU films. The use of CAB effectively improved the crosslinking degree of the WPUs, increasing the thermal stability and wate… Show more

“…[31] The antisymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations of methylene group peaks of NÀ mCABs and CABS were observed at around 2900 cm À 1 and 2800 cm À 1 , respectively. [32,33] After the surface modification of mCABs with APTES, the new peak observed at around 1550 cm À 1 was assigned to NÀ H bending vibrations. [34] The SEM images of NÀ mCABs and CABs were illustrated in Figure 2 and as depicted in Figure 2 (A and C) the surfaces of both beads were smooth; however, their inner parts were rough and the central of NÀ mCABs (D) were quite different as compared to CABs (B), probably, the addition of magnetic nanopowders could result in changing the central of NÀ mCABs.…”

“…It was because the POSS cross-linking agent was the vital parameter to increase the link density in the waterborne polyurethane system. Thus, the interaction for molecules strengthen could lead to significant improvement of the mechanical properties for the composite materials [28,38]. When the content of POSS increased, the rigidity of the molecular chain could enhance, and the mobility of the molecular chain would reduce, resulting in the decrease in mechanical properties.…”

“…Synthesis of eco-friendly waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) is one of most intensively developed fields of polymer chemistry [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. WPU are amphiphilic polymers, the hydrophilic parts of which are considered to be urethane fragments bound with ionic centers, and hydrophobic parts are urethane fragments of oligo ethers and low-molecular-weight diols/diamines.…”
