Enhanced interaction in the polyimide/sepiolite hybrid films via acid activating and polydopamine coating of sepiolite

Abstract: We aimed at enhancing interaction in the polyimide/sepiolite hybrid films with the loading of sepiolite in the polyimide matrix ranged from 0 to 8 wt% via acid activating and polydopamine doping. First, sepiolite was treated with a 3M HCl solution under reflux conditions. Then the acid-activated sepiolite was coated by mussel-inspired polydopamine under alkaline conditions. The coated polydopamine was found to successfully enhance dispersibility of sepiolite in the polyimide matrix. The modification of the sepi… Show more

“…The second stage of weight loss was related to the decomposition of the catechol fraction. The weight loss above 350 ℃ was mainly attributed to the degradation of the PDA backbone, which is in agreement with that in a previous work [42]. For HPW, the two weight loss stages below 200 ℃ were mainly due to the evaporation of physically adsorbed water and water of crystallization.…”

“…However, one-dimensional rod-like fillers (e.g. sepiolite [20] and attapulgite [21]) have recently gained attention because these fillers occupy less surface space than the disk-like ones, allowing fillers to be evenly distributed in polymeric matrices [22].…”

“…Optically transparent polymeric films are of increasing importance in various optical fields, such as flexible solar battery plate, nonlinear optical waveguide materials, flexible active matrix organic light emitting display devices, and other fields of optoelectronics and photonics . Polyimides (PIs) are widely acknowledged as potential candidates because of their excellent thermal stability, high mechanical performance, and good solvents resistance, as a result, which are extensively used in the aerospace and microelectronic industry . However, the further applications were limited by the insolubility and infusibility of their fully imidized form due to their rigid chains and strong interchain interactions .…”

[3][4][5][6] However, the further applications were limited by the insolubility and infusibility of their fully imidized form due to their rigid chains and strong interchain interactions. [7][8][9] Therefore, their processing is confined to the poly (amic acid) (PAA) precursors stage.…”
