Enhanced High-Density Line Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging of the Vitreoretinal Interface: Description of Selected Cases

Abstract: SD-OCT using enhanced HD line in vitreoretinal mode enables clear visualization of the posterior vitreous structure and often reclassifies patients previously thought to have a posterior vitreous detachment.

“…Advances in OCT technology offer a new opportunity to study vitreous structures. Noninvasive imaging of posterior vitreous structures, such as AM and BP, became possible with the introduction of spectral domain OCT [ 6 ]. Although most of the commercially available spectral domain OCT machines are best employed to visualize retina structures, imaging of the choroid and vitreous is also possible using a modified scanning technique [ 6 8 12 13 ].…”

Although most of the commercially available spectral domain OCT machines are best employed to visualize retina structures, imaging of the choroid and vitreous is also possible using a modified scanning technique [ 6 8 12 13 ]. Moreover, high-quality vitreous images can be obtained without special SS-OCT measures, because of SS-OCT's longer wavelength, fast scanning speed, and easy software enhancement [ 5 14 ].…”

“…Age, female gender, and myopia have been thought to be the risk factors for PVD, which was assessed by 90-diopter biomicroscopy or B-scan ultrasonography [ 21 23 ]. Recently, studies on OCT-based PVD evaluation have been introduced [ 10 , 11 , 24 ]. Although OCT-based technique enables us to sensitively detect serial evolution of PVD [ 11 ], the empty space of posterior precortical vitreous pocket can be misdiagnosed as complete PVD with OCT scans [ 24 ].…”

“…However, in that study, a previous version of OCT was used in the evaluation, and the resolution of the device may not have been sufficient to detect fine alterations of the PVC (Kicova et al 2012). Recent studies using the spectral-domain or sweptsource OCT show high-resolution images of the PVC and suggest the usefulness of OCT in evaluating PVD (Liu et al 2014;Ma et al 2014;Pang et al 2014;Abdolrahimzadeh et al 2016;Kim et al 2016). However, due to the limited depth of imaging, OCT cannot visualize the whole vitreous cavity, and the physiologic presence of hyporeflective spaces, such as premacular bursa or Cloquet's canal, in front of the macula and optic disc may lead to a false-positive interpretation of PVD (Kim et al 2016(Kim et al , 2017.…”
