Previously, a conventional synchronous generator is adapted into the wind energy conversion system to supply the required inertial support; however its slow behaviour may worsening the stability problem of the system during frequency event. In this paper, a new approach that enables virtual inertial support from supercapacitor during sudden load increase e.g. when wind turbine experiencing sudden wind or load changes is presented. Here, a new approach that can regulate the system frequency by controlling the charging and discharging process of supercapacitor is demonstrated. Hence, an algorithm on how to derive the behavior of supercapacitor and power converter is presented. From the simulation results, it has been found that this proposed approach successfully reduces the frequency nadir and ROCOF of the system frequency. It also able to avoid the second frequency dips during frequency recovery time.

Summary This paper presents the implementation of quasi‐Newton least mean fourth (QNLMF) control algorithm in the area of wind‐based off‐grid three‐phase four‐wire distributed power generation system for mitigation of power quality problems. Using the proposed control, reference current for voltage source converter is generated in such a way that the power quality problems such as load unbalancing, neutral current compensation, harmonics mitigation, reactive power compensation, and voltage and frequency regulation are observed. More importantly, in the proposed control, the step size parameter, which governs the convergence speed, is independent from the covariance and means of input signal, unlike other stochastic‐based algorithms where the step size parameter is fully dependent on the statistics of the input signal. As a result, the theoretical and practical evaluation shows that the QNLMF control method enjoys an independent performance from the eigenvalue spread of input signal. The proposed control is more suitable for the adopted system because of its fast and accurate dynamic response in uncertain conditions such as wind speed variations. The control is implemented on three‐phase four‐wire system, and performances are found satisfactory under steady state and dynamic state as per IEEE‐519‐2014 standards.

Increasing power system stability challenges are being witnessed worldwide, while transitioning toward low‐carbon grids with a high‐share of power electronic converter (PEC)‐interfaced renewable energy sources (RESs) and distributed energy resources (DERs). Concurrently, new technologies and operational strategies are being implemented or proposed to tackle these challenges. Since electricity grids are deregulated in many jurisdictions, such technologies need to be integrated within a market framework, which is often a challenge in itself due to inevitable regulatory delays in updating grid codes and market rules. It is also highly desirable to ensure that an economically feasible optimal technology mix is integrated in the power system, without imposing additional burdens on electricity consumers. This article provides a comprehensive overview of emerging power system stability challenges posed by PEC‐interfaced RES and DER, particularly related to low inertia and low system strength conditions, while also introducing new technologies that can help tackle these challenges and discussing the need for suitable techno‐economic considerations to integrate them into system and market operation. As a key point, the importance of recognizing the complexity of system services to guarantee stability in low‐carbon grids is emphasized, along with the need to carefully integrate new grid codes and market mechanisms in order to exploit the full benefits of emerging technologies in the transition toward ultra‐low carbon futures.
