Enhanced Emission by Accumulated Charges at Organic/Metal Interfaces Generated during the Reverse Bias of Organic Light Emitting Diodes

Abstract: A high frequency rectangular alternating voltage was applied to organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) with the structure ITO/TPD/Alq 3 /Al and ITO/CoPc/Alq 3 /Al, where ITO is indium-tin-oxide, TPD is 4,4 -bis[N-phenyl-N-(m-tolyl)amino]biphenyl, CoPc is cobalt phthalocyanine, and Alq 3 is Tris(8-quinolinolato)aluminum, and the effect on emission of the reverse bias was examined. The results reveal that the emission intensity under an alternating reverse-forward bias is greater than that under an alternating ze… Show more

“…This means that there is a best match in the energy level between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of every organic layer for device A. [22] Meanwhile, the current density as well as luminance of device B rose more sharply with the increase in voltage compared with device A. Device A exhibited the largest CE and PE, which were 29.4 cd A −1 and 21.5 lm W −1 , respectively.…”

“…For example, the theoretical efficiency limit for WOLEDs is about 248 lm W −1 , indicating that there is still much room for tandem WOLEDs [225]. Besides, the voltage of tandem WOLEDs is much higher than that of single-unit WOLEDs, which increases the power consumption and easily leads to the low PE [226,227,228]. Therefore, each EL unit is required to harvest all excitons for efficient emission, while the CGL is needed to be effective for the charge generation and charge separation.…”

“…In OLEDs, when holes meet electrons, singlets and triplets will be formed with a ratio of 1: 3 due to the effect of spin statistics [128][129][130]. In the case of fluorescent emitters, singlets decay rapidly with the prompt nanoseconds fluorescence, whereas the radiative decay of triplets is spin forbidden [131][132][133].…”
