Enhanced Conversion of X-Rays into Visible Light in Thin Composite Layers (Composite Anthracene-PbCl[sub 2] Screens)

Abstract: The absorption of x‐rays by a solid organic phosphor can be enhanced to a great extent by the inclusion of a disperse second solid phase that consists of heavy atoms. In consequence the x‐ray to visible light conversion can be enhanced by one or two orders of magnitude when using composite screens. Experiments on composite anthracene‐ PbCl2 screens reveal an amplification factor of about 30. The experimental results are discussed and are compared with existing theories.
