This paper studies the suitability of shorted patch and CPW-feed square slot antennas for CubeSat communications. To study the effect of the CubeSat body on the antennas performance, we have simulated both antennas in the High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) with and without the CubeSat body. Compared to CPWfeed square slot antenna, the shorted patch antenna achieves higher gain and wider bandwidth. We have also re-dimensioned both antennas to shift their resonant frequencies to 2.45 GHz using Quasi Newton method in HFSS. This thus enables their use in the unlicensed ISM band. The repurposed shorted patch has smaller return loss; e.g., -27.5 dB (without CubeSat), higher gain; e.g., 5.3 dBi and wider bandwidth than the repurposed CPW-feed Square slot antenna. Lastly, further enhancement in the gain of re-dimensioned CPW-feed square slot antenna shows an increase of total gain from 2 to 2.52 dB.

Abstract-A compact printed ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with band-notched characteristic is proposed. The presented antenna consists of a modified ground plane structure and a novel C-shaped radiation patch fed by a microstrip line. By etching a C-shaped slot in the radiating patch, the notched band of 3.3-3.8 GHz for WiMAX is generated. The notched band can be easily tuned by controlling the size of the slot. The measured results show that the proposed antenna operates over a wide bandwidth from 3 GHz to 16 GHz with return loss less than −10, except a stop-band of 3.3-3.8 GHz. Some key parameters of the antenna are discussed in details. The time-domain characteristics are given.

In this article, the slotted microstrip‐ fed elliptical patch antenna is designed and optimized to operate at the resonance frequency of 5.38 GHz. Then, the designed patch antenna is further analyzed in a resonant cavity formed by a frequency selective surface (FSS) superstrate and antenna ground plane. The highly reflective behavior of FSS from the offset of the resonance is utilized for improving the performance of the antenna. The optimized slotted geometry produces a gain improvement of 2.5 dBi, impedance bandwidth improvement of 0.21 GHz, simultaneously at the operating resonance frequency of 5.38 GHz. After placing an FSS superstrate at a height of 28.5 mm above the antenna substrate, further improvement of 5.1 dBi gain and 0.13 GHz bandwidth is attained, For validation purpose, the prototypes of the slotted patch antenna with and without FSS superstrate are fabricated and characterized. A fairly good agreement is achieved in the measured and simulated results.
