Engineering Students' Virtual Learning Challenges during COVID-19 Pandemic Lockdown: A Case Study

Abstract: As a result of the pandemic lockdown, most Faculty, Staff, and students in Nigerian universities were unable to learn online because of irregular power and internet unavailability. As a major concern to the Nigerian Deans of Engineering, a study was commissioned by the Deans to identify the extent of the problem with a view to identifying the research and development areas and proffer an indigenous solution to the problems identified. This paper discusses the results of an online survey administered during the… Show more

“…M-learning was not widespread in certain regions, and as a result of this pandemic, the education system was compelled to move online. Consequently, there were no established practices or sufficient potential, which contributed to high operational expenses and difficulty in resolving issues [34,41].…”

“…On the contrary, certain studies have cast doubt on the actual advantages of mobile learning and its limitations. The implementation of m-learning poses numerous challenges, some of which include limited resources, content-related issues across all subject areas (including economic education) [29,30], technical difficulties arising from inadequate knowledge and skills of instructors and students [31,32], distraction from work tasks [33], a large number of users, and the need for online connectivity [29]. The evaluation of mobile learning can also be problematic as it needs to be both transparent and secure, while ensuring that students do not receive assistance from others [34,35].…”

“…Internet is a resource for everyone, and especially for adolescents who like to receive and share personal, social information, and new knowledge. Previous studies have found that excessive use of the Internet is often associated with negative health conditions, including physical and emotional distress (e.g., anxiety, depression), and the risk of becoming addicted (Dong et al, 2020;Xu et al, 2019;Bolu et al, 2020). The current COVID-19 pandemic has changed individual and social life experiences and way of learning had also change from face to face into online distance learning (Taylor et al, 2020).…”
