A number of studies have examined water use at the farm level, but water use by food processing firms has received relatively little attention. In light of current concerns regarding water conservation, the objective of this paper is to bridge this gap in our understanding of water use in the agri‐food sector. Four aspects of water use (intake, treatment prior to use, recirculation and discharge) are examined for the Canadian food processing industry and three of its subsectors. Price and output elasticities are estimated using plant‐evel data from a 1991 survey of water‐using firms. Results indicate that all aspects of water use are sensitive to economic factors. Implications for government policies are identified.

As is the case with capital-energy substitution, interfuel substitutability has been of longstanding interest to the energy economics and policy community. However, no quantitative meta-analysis has yet been carried out of this literature. This paper fills this gap by analyzing a broad sample of studies of interfuel substitution in the industrial sector, manufacturing industry or subindustries, or macro-economy of a variety of developed and developing economies. Publication bias is controlled for by including the primary study sample size and the influence factor of the journal in the meta-regression. Results for the shadow elasticity of substitution between coal, oil, gas, and electricity for forty-five primary studies show that there are easy substitution possibilities between all the fuel pairs with the exception of gas and electricity. Model and data specification issues very significantly affect the estimates derived by each individual study. While publication bias does not seem to be present there is a relationship between sample size and the value of the elasticities with larger sample studies finding greater values of the elasticities.

Cost structure of petroleum refining industry in Kuwait has been examined, with specific focus on factor substitution, and economies of scale and utilisation. This has been done by estimating translog cost functions, both long-run and short-run, using annual time-series data covering the period from 1976 to 1998. The results indicate that the implied production structure is non-homothetic, and the pattern of scale effect is labour and capital saving but material using. The evidence also supports presence of induced exogenous technical change, which is non-neutral (labour and capital using, and material saving). The elasticity of substitution between capital and labour is negative, implying that the two inputs are complements. The results also indicate absence of economies and diseconomies of scale in the petroleum refining industry.
