With energy transition gaining momentum, energy storage technologies are increasingly spotlighted as they can effectively handle mismatches in supply and demand. The decreasing cost of distributed energy generation technologies and energy storage technologies as well as increasing demand for local flexibility is opening up new possibilities for the deployment of energy storage technologies in local energy communities. In this context, community energy storage has potential to better integrate energy supply and demand at the local level and can contribute towards accommodating the needs and expectations of citizens and local communities as well as future ecological needs. However, there are techno-economical and socio-institutional challenges of integrating energy storage technologies in the largely centralized present energy system, which demand socio-technical innovation. To gain insight into these challenges, this article studies the technical, demand and political articulations of new innovative local energy storage technologies based on an embedded case study approach. The innovation dynamics of two local energy storage innovations, the seasalt battery of DrTen® and the seasonal thermal storage Ecovat®, are analysed. We adopt a co-shaping perspective for understanding innovation dynamics as a result of the socio-institutional dynamics of alignment of various actors, their articulations and the evolving network interactions. Community energy storage necessitates thus not only technical innovation but, simultaneously, social innovation for its successful adoption. We will assess these dynamics also from the responsible innovation framework that articulates various forms of social, environmental and public values. The socio-technical alignment of various actors, human as well as material, is central in building new socio-technical configurations in which the new storage technology, the community and embedded values are being developed.

Este artículo revisa el desarrollo actual para incrementar el acceso a la electricidad y la implementación de viviendas con electricidad neutral (viviendas autónomas no conectadas a la red eléctrica) en diferentes escenarios. Además, se presentan con más detalle las posibles direcciones de investigación para tecnologías de viviendas con electricidad neutral. Para esto, se describe un caso de una posible vivienda con electricidad neutral en Colombia junto con algunos resultados iniciales de simulaciones usando energía solar fotovoltaica, una nueva batería a base de sal marina (the Sea-Salt battery) y una celda de combustible a base de glicerol (the Glycerol Fuel Cell) como sistema de respaldo. Las simulaciones utilizan el software BEopt y DstorageS. Este análisis se realiza utilizando datos medidos de consumo de electricidad en una vivienda localizada en la zona metropolitana de Bogotá-Colombia. Resultados preliminares muestran que una vivienda en Colombia puede funcionar con electricidad neutral, al tener una energía solar FV de 4 kW con una batería de sal marina de 10 kWh y una celda de combustible de glicerol de 2 kW funcionando de forma autónoma durante todo el año 2019.

To counter the effects of global climate change, attributed to the CO 2 emissions resulting from burning fossil fuels for generating electricity and heat, global efforts are being made to achieve an energy transition. This includes that the share of energy generated using sustainable sources (e.g. solar, wind, hydro) should be increased, while the share of energy generated using fossil sources (e.g. natural gas, coal, oil) should be decreased, ultimately phasing out the usage of fossil fuels altogether. How this energy transition should be achieved, or even when the energy transition should be completed is subject of heated debates in political arenas, courts of law and the society as a whole. Whether or not future electricity demands can be met by sustainable sources is a particular important part of this debate. On the one hand, fossil fuels are (for the moment) cheap and readily available, by using fossil fuels it is always possible to generate the appropriate amount of electricity to match the demand. On the other hand, generating electricity from sunlight or wind can only be done when enough sunlight is available or the wind-speed is in an appropriate bandwidth. However, as electricity is also used during the night, and on cloudy, windless or stormy days, using sustainable energy sources as the primary supply for electricity generation can lead to a significant mismatch between supply and demand. This can imply that sometimes the electricity generated by solar parks during the day has to be curtailed because there is no demand for it, while during the night electricity still has to be generated using fossil fuels to meet the demand.A solution to this problem seems obvious: store the electricity. This allows to generate electricity using sustainable sources when available, and to store a sufficient amount to be able to meet the demand at all times. Although, this solution sounds simple, still many questions remain. Which type of storage should be used?, Where should the storage be located?, What should be the capacity of the storage?, How should the storage be used?, etc. In this thesis these types of questions are addressed for a specific type of storage: batteries. To answer these questions, and to support the important decisions necessary to complete the energy transition, three contributions are made:The first contribution is the development of the diffusion buffer model (DiBumodel) for battery state of charge (SoC) prediction. This model is specifically designed to be used in simulation tools for energy management in (smart) grids. Hence, this model should be a consolidation of broad applicability, accuracy and simplicity. The broad applicability of the DiBu-model is demonstrated by accurate predictions of the SoC of Lead-acid, Lithium-ion Polymer and Lithium Tot slot, en eigenlijk als voornaamste, bedank ik mijn familie.
