Energy saving in case of intermittent production by retrofitting service plant systems through inverter technology: a feasibility study

Abstract: Many production machines have high energy consumption due to the large number of electrical motors used to rotate equipment, such as tools, fans and pumps. Moreover, in different industrial sectors production is not continuous but intermittent, where working times alternate with idle times. During idle times continuous switch off is not always possible due to technical limitations, and if it is possible, it can cause higher energy consumption due to peak current at the start-up of the electrical motors. The pu… Show more

“…Such demand level is typical of medium and large units (in general, industries) supplied by three-phase voltages. Therefore, a three-phase PF definition compatible with the characteristics of TIMs (industries main load [14]) might be more suitable for billing. Nonetheless, it was not found an explicit statement in the investigated documents about which of the existing PF definitions should be used.…”

“…From the foregoing discussion, it can be noticed that evaluation of one important load has not been done yet. According to [14]: "there are 85 million large electrical motors in the community market. These consume 65-70% of the energy used within industry."…”

“…Industrial plants have to face variable, uncertain and intermittent demands (e.g., days with high production and days with no production, alternation of working times and idle times, etc.,). For that reason, the production process is run at a wide range of production rates, and the required flexibility results in reduced energy efficiency and increased costs [11]. Consequently, this range of production rates should be considered when investments in energy efficiency measures (EEMs) are planned.…”

For that reason, a wide range of production rate interests the production and the required flexibility results in reduced energy efficiency and increasing costs [11]. Even the specific energy consumption is subject to uncertainty, as it is a function of the production rate.…”
