Energy release of mixed explosives during propagation of a nonideal detonation under conditions similar to the operation conditions of a blasthole charge

Abstract: Detonation experiments were performed in a specially developed explosive device simulating a blasthole using charges of fine-grained and coarse-grained (granular) 30/70 TNT/ammonium nitrate mixtures of identical density 0.89 g/cm 3 in steel shells with an inner diameter of 28 mm and a wall thickness of 3 mm at detonation velocities of 4.13 and 2.13 km/sec, respectively. Despite significant differences in detonation velocity (pressure), identical expansion of the charge shells was observed. On the other hand, n… Show more

“…Emulsion explosives are widely used in the engineering blasting and mining industries [1,2]. Emulsion explosives consist of an emulsion matrix and a sensitizer, the matrix material of water-in-oil type (w/o) of an emulsion explosive is detonator-insensitive until it is sensitized by a physical or chemical method, converting it into an emulsion explosive.…”

“…In our previous research, MgH 2 was used as a chemical sensitizer to sensitize the emulsion matrix with "hydrogen bubbles", and experimental results have shown that MgH 2 -sensitized emulsion explosives have excellent detonation characteristics and anti-pressure ability [9][10][11]. However, emulsion explosives sensitized by MgH 2 also have problems with foaming and safety.…”

“…When the shock wave propagates into the emulsion explosives, hot spots are created as the shock wave compresses air bubbles and the reaction initiates the explosive around the hot spots and accelerates to detonation [8]. Emulsion explosives have the advantages of water resistance, good safety, low production cost, moderate explosion sensitivity and little environmental pollution [9]. Additionally, emulsion explosives have a strong work capacity and even surpass TNT in terms of brisance.…”

“…Emulsion explosive is a kind of water-in-oil industrial explosives formed by the supersaturated solution of soluble oxidant (ammonium nitrate) emulsifying in the oil-phase at a high shearing speed [1][2][3], which has been widely used in engineering blasting and mining industries due to its excellent performance of water resistance, safety and storage stability [4,5]. As a water-containing explosive, the explosion power of traditional emulsion explosive is relatively low, which severely hinders its application and development [6,7].…”
